The Japan earthquake was the fourth most powerful ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.1, twice more powerful than the initial estimate of 8.9... " I can't even imagine..

And the waves went inland 6 miles. They’re saying those that far inland weren’t prepared. Prayers for all.
It’s hard to comprehend that number.
Looking at a tsunami map of the Pacific really gives one an idea of how powerful this was.
Just the idea that an earthquake in Japan could cause a tsunami that wrecks boats in a harbor in Santa Cruz, Calif. is amazing.
If only the BLS were so diligent.
Wasn’t the Alaska earthquake in 1964 about that magnitude?
I’m watching a Japanese feed (which would make more sense if I actually understood Japanese).
It looks like they are still saying 8.8 and counting 1,300 fatalities, assuming ‘M8.8’ is the magnitude and ‘1,300’ followed by what looks like ‘lamda’ ‘path-something’ means people gone
1 May 22, 1960 Valdivia, Chile 1960 Valdivia earthquake 9.5
2 March 27, 1964 Prince William Sound, USA 1964 Alaska earthquake 9.2
3 December 26, 2004 Sumatra, Indonesia 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake 9.1
4 March 11, 2011 Sendai, Japan 2011 Sendai earthquake 9.0 ~ 9.1
Greatest magnitudes.
On what basis did they raise the magnitude?
Television ratings.
Polls
Yep. I knew the magnitude was 9 or above. Funny, the facts that seem to stick with you, even after nearly half a century. I was 11 at the time.
Despite the 9.1 opinion of one employee at a tsunami center, all the official sources still say 8.9
I spent the summer of 1957 in AK having no clue that Seward would be shaken down and tsunamied seven short years later!!!
Raising the number means there was more damage done. They should have kept it lower.
My first memorable quake was the Tehachapi shaker of 1952 and I said no more so I moved to Eureka in time for the “big One” in Dec 1954 and I stopped counting after 10 or 12 more. We will have the Mother of all subduction quakes just off shore someday. Don’t call me, I’ll call you. Most of the businesses west of 101 were closed all day today...
When that big Pacific swimming pool gits ta rockin, don't bother knockin!!! (just start runnin uphill)
This UTube link during the first surge is revealing.
The sound is terrible. You might want to kill the sound while watching.
The surge appeared to hit during low tide. If it had hit at high tide, the damage might have been worse
The action picks up at about 3 minutes with a good size boat comes out of the harbor attached to a chunk of dock.
The boat came close to hitting the damaged sea wall.
A little later in the background a bigger boat breaks loose and heads for other boats.

No wonder, he transcribed it in fast forward mode which made it all the more dramatic with the mute button on. Thanks for pingin this.
Considering Mt Rainier is 112 miles from the ocean, an explosion big enough to cause the ocean to drain into the crater would likely blow a hole in the NW US big enough to take out Seattle, Tacoma, and probably parts of Portland. In fact, the blast would have to be BIGGER than the Yellowstone ‘supervolcano’.
The situation you describe is not likely to happen.
However, the mudflows, ashfall and subsequent earthquakes would most certainly provide more than enough damage on their own.
If the cone of Rainier did collapse, you’re more likely to get a ‘Crater Lake’ type of caldera.
