DEVELOPING: Police say they have arrested a 62-year-old Alabama man for allegedly poisoning trees at a historic site on Auburn University's campus, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship on Jan. 10.
The Auburn Police Division said Thursday that Harvey A. Updyke, of Dadeville, Ala., was arrested and charged with first degree criminal mischief. Police allege Updyke deliberately poisoned oak trees at Toomer's Corner with a commonly used herbicide, applied in "lethal amounts" to the soil around the two trees.
The 130-year-old trees likely cannot be saved, officials said.

Yep, the guy needs to start contributing more $$$ to the UA Athletic Dept so they can rent better players.
Something tells me that even though these trees were in Auburn, the ghost of Bear Bryant would love to come back and kick this guy’s ass for doing something low-down like that.

The way things are now he will probably get more time for killing a tree than a human. I always heard justice was blind but now it is crazy I believe a public flogging would be in order here.

I guess I’m not upset about it, not having a dog in the Alabama/Auburn fight...but I’m sure shaking my head at the unadulterated stupidity of the whole thing. What an idiot.

Those trees have a replacement value of many tens of thousands of dollars each. This ain’t a case of spray painted graffiti on a garage door. This guy maybe needs to lose his house.
Hear, hear! I’m a Bama alum but my sibling, father, and grandfather are Auburn grads. I’m absolutely disgusted with this guy. He needs to be put UNDER the jail.
