Romney and the Birthers
Public Policy Polling ^ | 02/15/2011 | Tom Jensen

Posted on 02/15/2011 10:26:29 AM PST by speciallybland

Birtherism is alive and well within the GOP ranks, and their 2012 nominee preferences tell a story about the difficulty Mitt Romney faces in trying to appeal to an electorate that's a whole lot further out there than he is.

Birthers make a majority among those voters who say they're likely to participate in a Republican primary next year. 51% say they don't think Barack Obama was born in the United States to just 28% who firmly believe that he was and 21% who are unsure. The GOP birther majority is a new development. The last time PPP tested this question nationally, in August of 2009, only 44% of Republicans said they thought Obama was born outside the country while 36% said that he definitely was born in the United States. If anything birtherism is on the rise.

How does this impact Romney? Well among the 49% of GOP primary voters who either think Obama was born in the United States or aren't sure, Romney's the first choice to be the 2012 nominee by a good amount, getting 23% to 16% for Mike Huckabee, 11% for Sarah Palin, and 10% for Newt Gingrich. But with the birther majority he's in a distant fourth place at 11%, with Mike Huckabee at 24%, Sarah Palin at 19%, and Newt Gingrich at 14% all ahead of him. That pushes him into a second place finish overall at 17% with Mike Huckabee again leading the way this month at 20%. Palin's third with 15%, followed by Gingrich at 12%, Ron Paul at 8%, Mitch Daniels and Tim Pawlenty at 4%, and John Thune at 1%.

I do not believe that Barry Sortero was born in the United States nor any of its possessions and I suppose that makes me a “birther.” And, regarding Mitt Romney, I do not favor him as a presidential candidate. However, if he is the Conservative/Republican choice, I’ll support him. To do otherwise would mean supporting Barack and I cannot imagine myself ever doing that even one of my worst moments. And, by the way, I’ve never had a moment that “worst.”

This may explain Obama’s refusal to resolve this issue. The progressives are using Birtherism as a divide-and-conquer tool.

This explains why the sudden interest in whacking Pubbies with ambush questions about Obama’s birthplace.

The media can then sort people by this characteristic, and can safely ignore anyone tainted by the Birther brush.

Interesting polling.
I am not sure of the tie in with Birthers not supporting Romney but it is apparently there.
Romeny could not win against 0dumbo IMO. Our candidate hasn’t emerged yet but I do NOT want MSM choosing him/her for us.

I want the birthers to stay loud.If 0dumbo continues to ignore more and more will ask why
and if all of a sudden 0dumbo produces a long form people will ask why did you wait
No matter how Bill o’Reilly tries to make birthers idiots the issue is important

The GOP birther majority is a new development.
No it isn't. You just have more people willing to speak their mind as time goes on.

I love how the lib moron finds it odd that birtherism (or its strains) have increased. Not mentioning it was Governor Abercrombie who added fuel to the fire.

I was one of those very annoyed by the birther movement, thinking it was a distraction. In fact I was rooting for Abercrombie to put an end to it. But when he came up empty, I became suspicious - as did millions more.

I bet you’re right about that. On one hand, Romney doesn’t give the alarming impression of declining mental faculties as McQueeg did in 2008, but Willard the Wanker is even more lacking in principle, and that takes some doing. A candidate devoid of scruples, like Mittens, would not build conservative support, and would lose to 0 by a margin similar to McCain’s.

Well of course that’s the media’s strategy. The question is are we stupid enough to fall for it. The answer is probably. Just look at the vitriol aimed at Bush and Romney on this board. Hey, Romney is not my choice and Bush could have done a lot of things differently but I would crawl across broken glass to support Romney, Chuckleberry, Gingrich or really anyone on the GOP side (well not sure about Paul) if it means getting rid of the disaster we have now.

I’ve seen Romney’s birth certificate. He was born in Liberalville.

If his father and mother were US citizens when Mitt was born in the US then he is.

I got a fundraising call today from someone claiming to be calling on behalf of John Boehner. I let the poor girl have it. I told her that I had no respect for Boehner and all the Republicans who are so timid that they are afraid to demand that they see Obama's Birth Certificate, and then suggested that she call me back for a contribution after Boehner grew a pair, and did the right thing.

Wonder which way Willard will wend*. Given his unscrupulousness, I bet he’ll try to please everyone with slippery statements, and will end up satisfying no one.

* I always did like Bill Safire. :D

If? If? If Obama was born in Hawaii ... (so what?)

Romney is not eligible. And THAT was before RomneyCARE.

Mitt Romney’s father was born in Mexico.

I don't support Romney, but just because his father was born in Mexico may not disqualify him. If his father was an American citizen at the time of his birth, then Romney might qualify as "natural born".

Was Mitt’s mom and dad citizens when he was born(in the US)?

If they were then Mitt is NBC. I have not looked in to Mitt because he is such a putz.

O on the other hand is not because no matter where he was born his Daddy Obama senior was not a US citizen.
