[history]
SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Don Whetsell buried his grandfather last year, finally laying him to rest 60 years after his death.
The final resting place next to his wife was far better than the previous one: on a shelf with the neglected remains of 3,500 others in a storage area dubbed the "room of forgotten souls."

Jeez, it’s important to remember that, while dumping on the streets and cycling them from the gutter to the jails to the emergency rooms is intolerable, the Bad Old Days were really bad. The one article makes clear that folks (usually poor) were dumped in those places for any pretext. “Probably Alzeheimer’s”? “Persistent seizures”?! Good Grief! Lord knows how many sick people were just warehoused there while they died, untreated.

Whatever happened to Nurse Ratchett? I heard that she changed her name and went into politics.

Titicut Follies was banned by a MA court for showing the horrors of Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. The judge said it violated the “privacy” rights of the inmates.

For a long time, medical science knew no way to ameliorate Alzheimers, and even current treatments are weak. Today, along with better treatments for such ailments as grand mal epilepsy, a lot of those patients can live in their own home with a resident caretaker for a long time.

It would have made a good play or acted movie “with names changed to protect the innocent” and the law couldn’t say squat about it any more.
