Rick Santorum's nascent presidential campaign has died with a whimper fueled by a pander. And no matter whether it was born out of ignorance, political expediency or both, there's no excuse.
Mr. Santorum, the former U.S. senator and representative of Pennsylvania, spoke to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Tuesday last in Des Moines. All U.S. vehicles should be required to burn ethanol and other biofuels in addition to gasoline, he said.
"This is purely and simply a national security issue," said Santorum, a one-time opponent of taxpayer subsidies for alternative fuels, noting that some oil-producing countries are hostile to the United States. (See today's George Will column to better slay the implications of this rationale.)
Santorum said it's the government's responsibility to expand the marketplace for such alternative fuels by mandating their use. (And just as incredible, Newt Gingrich said much the same thing last week.)

If, by some miracle, this does turn out to be true, then all I can say is, "WHAT!?"
It doesn’t matter. The only way Santorum could be a viable presidential candidate this go around (or any in the future unless he gets back into the Senate or is elected Governor of Pennyslvania) would be — God forbid it — if there were a mass casualty terrorist attack on U.S. soil, in which case films of his warnings while a Senator and just after losing his seat would give him a prophetic and Churchillian ring.
As my former Senator and a farmer in PA, I’ll be the first to tell Rick to STFU. He was a good Senator, but he’s off the wall on this one. Ethanol is killing not only the small engines that “have” to use it, it’s also taking away one product that we all need - and that is food. What a jackwagon he is.

He was a good, steady Senator, and I was very sorry to see some conservatives turn against him in 2006, but he really has gone off the rails in the past few months. I guess he’s just desperate to get back into politics.
But this ain’t the way to do it. Liberals wouldn’t touch him on a bet, and now he’s kicking conservatives.
I didn't know he supported Sphincter over Toomey. That worked out well for him, didn't it?

It requires more energy to produce one gallon of ethanol than the energy contained by that gallon.
The problem is that this whole ethanol utopia was thought out by a bunch of non-technical, non-principled, political morons instead of thermodynamicists.

Me too. Actions have consequences.
Generally, it is stupid to burn our food in a time of peace, when there are ample supplies of oil.
But the cars should, since it is easy enough, be able to run on ethanol, so if Iran decides to nuke the middle east, we can switch over to high-ethanol mixes, since we can grow a lot of extra ethanol if we absolutely have to, especially if we stop supplying food to the world because there’s a pending apocalypse.

Let’s stop burning bourbon.
From a national security point of view, we simply need a strong economy, which yields a strong dollar, which allows us to buy OPO (other people’s oil) cheaply until it’s all gone. Then we drill for our own and sell it at top dollar.
A strong economy is the foundation of national security. When we’re ready to cut scope of government to what makes sense, (Depts of State, Treasury, War and Justice), and have them actually do their respective jobs, then we’re off to the races to a standard of living 10 times higher than today and the rest of the world will again be 100 years behind us. The private sector could get going and oil would cost less than $30 per barrel for us.
This is enough to take him out of contention. He's now a consummated politician.
That's when I lost all respect for Rush Limbaugh. One word from him & Toomey would've won.
Now that you mention it, I really liked Santorum before that! But yeah, I never thought of him as anything but a hack after that. That primary made me sick, but it opened my eyes.
Toomey seems to be thumbing his nose at Tea Partiers who elected him.
I looked, but couldn’t find an e-Mail for Toomey.

It should have never been championed in the first place.
A lie is a lie is a lie whether it are the Bushes, Carter, Obama or any future or past president who say it. Technological questions should be resolved by bona fide scientists and not by political idealogues like Gore and others.
And by the way, don’t fall too much in love with windpower either. Let’s first use our God-given natural wealth waiting for us in the depth of our soil.
Dig, dynamite and drill, baby. Just imagine the huge employment needs that will be created in this country if we just use our brain.
