ER Doctor's view on the culture of dependence in the rural and urban poor
Emergency Medicine News ^ | January 2011 | Edwin Leap MD

Jim-Bob's Terrible Confession
Edwin Leap MD
Cast: Mama, 40; Daddy, 42, Chastity, 19; Jim Bob, 17.
Setting: The family is sitting around the table in their subsidized housing discussing the future. Mama is microwaving dinner, as Daddy pops an Oxycontin, which Chastity eyes with interest. Her back has been hurting, too.
Background: Jim Bob, ever the black sheep of the family, is on edge. He has news to tell the family, but he knows it won't go well. Chastity knows about it, and is being a typical big sister. A typical big sister, that is, who refuses to work, loves to party, and has seriously considered a career in government-sponsored childbirth.
Mama: How's your back pain, honey? Any better?
Daddy: Naw, I think them Oxycontin aren't gonna help anymore. I need something a little stronger. That lousy ER doctor offered me Lortab. Can you imagine? Might as well give me Pez!(Laughter from all.)
Mama: He tried that on me, and I called the patient advocate. I got him in all kinds of trouble! By the way, your Aunt Treena's birthday is coming up. Next time someone offers you Lortab, think about the family before you storm off, OK?
Daddy: As always, honey, you're right. (Turns and smacks her on the backside, winces in pain from the effort).
Chastity: My boyfriend has methadone. You want me to ask him if you can try it?
Daddy: Sure, sugar. There's a nice girl! See if you can borrow a couple for your old man. What's Ricky take them for?
Chastity: He fell out of that tree stand a few years ago. Ever since then, he has headaches. And pretty bad....
All: BACK PAIN! (Laughter, but nervously from Jim Bob.)

I think the doctor's comments at the end of this little vignette are very true. I have always believed that people rise or fall according to the expectations set for them. If you set the bar low, most people will never try for anything more. If you set it high, and you don't make excuses for people, then they will try harder and accomplish more. Ignoring the problem because we don't want to be seen as judgmental really doesn't help anyone.

Putting it in script form was weird... I was thinking Chastity’s back wouldn’t be hurting if she would stay off it.

*shrug*

I’m in a weird mood.

ER doctors have been passing out Vicodin and Percoset like small packs of M&M’s for YEARS. That has to stop. and I think it finally is slowing down.

“....Is this only in Appalachia? Hardly. The inner cities experience similar problems.

But the greater problem, and perhaps the greater tragedy, is that many of those in positions of influence — in medicine, politics, education — know it. But they’re afraid to point it out for fear of being branded judgmental or unkind. I think not telling the truth is the unkindest cut of all....”

Anyone who has worked in an ER has seen this play out time and time again. His closing statement is dead on. This scenario is not limited to any region nor it is limited to any economic level. The well heeled are just as likely be drug seekers as the flat broke.

This story is more true than fantasy, and in a way I don’t blame the people, human nature being what it is. This all goes back to the Great Society and the generational impact of government providing a so called “safety net” for the poorer souls out there. If you provide a freebie out there, people will find a way to exploit it.
There is a complete network these people have created, and they are as sharp as lawyers in understanding and taking advantage of every government program out there.

That's setting the amusement bar terribly high for only the second post of the thread...

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Nah, in the inner city there ain’t no father around the house. He is either unknown, in prison or on the Maury Povich show.

Consequence of licensing and fees for everything. People who once worked, and worked hard develope an instant sense of entitlement when a society legislates their jobs away. It does not take being born into it, as the leftists understood well when they planned this.

a career in government-sponsored childbirth

I've never seen it put this way, but this is as accurate a description as you could get.

One of our very dear friends is a 3rd year Medical Resident at a major hospital in Wisconsin. She's studying Anesthesiology. She's also Canadian. She came here to escape the Canadian health care system.

This woman was shriekingly liberal 3 years ago. Now, not so much. She says things that would make me blush, if I could blush that is.

You’re not kidding.

“..people will find a way to exploit it.”

And the most vicious exploitation is that of the bureaucrats, who have figured out their road to promotion is through the miseries of these people via our wallets.
