Federal proscutors have opened a criminal probe of allegations that public employees conspired to paralyze the city in last week's blizzard, sources said Tuesday.
The investigation by the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney's public integrity unit comes in response to Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Queens) revelation that guilt-wracked sanitation and transportation workers confessed the alleged work slowdown to him.
If their claim is true, the feds would examine whether the wire or mail fraud statutes were violated by pocketing overtime pay during an illegal job action, sources said.
Halloran vowed Monday to keep confidential the names of the three sanit and two Department of Transportation workers who came forward.
A spokesman for Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch refused to confirm or deny the existence of an investigation.
The city Department of Investigation is also looking into allegations of a work slowdown in retaliation for budget cuts and demotions of supervisors within the Sanitation Department.

Too many people were affected, and there’s too much documentation. People will be fired, hopefully prosecuted. Unfortunately, it likely won’t be the guys at the very top.
The government gives these unions all the power to bargain collectively, not be fired, etc. and then rise with righteous indignation when the union uses the power. DUH!

They should be bringing an investigation for violations of RICO.
Aside from that, the state should be bringing charges of mayhem against the drivers.

I’m not so sure that the mob still has that kind of “oomph” with the Sanatation Department anymore, but regardless, people DIED waiting for ambulances that couldn’t come the day of that storm, and nothing short of manslaughter charges would be satisfactory to me in prosecuting those (union leaders) responsible.
They’ll probably get a dozen union members to conduct some $20 million “study”, which after 6 months will conclude that the unions are simply underpaid and overworked. Then, they’ll give everyone a raise... retroactive to Jan 1, 1812.
Not prosecuting the unions.
Prosecuting specific union members and perhaps union leaders - to facilitate their replacement with bosses who will endorse Obama, not Hillary.
The fire department in my town does a little trick on a continuing basis.
Fireman Jack will be scheduled to work Wednesday. He deliberateley calls in sick. So, Fireman John gets called in to work overtime. I’m sure the union has a ‘ghost’ schedule of when everyone will take sick leave...and who wants OT and when.
The result: All sick leave gets used up, and every hour of sick leave taken results in time and a half OT for somebody else. And, Jack has a part time job lined up for Wednesday (his sick day).
The city tried to correct this, by shuffling personnel and closing a station whenever too many people called in sick. There was an uproar, red herring arguments about safety, and eventually they ran the fire chief out of town.
So, it continues.
The unionization of public employees is immoral.
Of course the whistle blowers will be fired or maybe end up in a dumpster dead. The investigation will take a couple years and even more workers will be hired to take care of snow. Supervisor pay will be raised and all will be happy.
Easy investigation. “I’m workin’ for the union...” Does anyone expect Holder’s department to do anything about union loafing? Maybe loafing isn’t the right term... extortion might be better. “Remember what happened last time we had a blizzard?”
