An Illinois woman walked away from a car crash that killed her husband, authorities believe, but they have found no trace of her other than footprints in the snow leading to a road.

Can’t imagine why the detour but that nearby body of water is disconcerting.

Yeah.
For sure, that.

If you’re gonna toss Poe on the pile, I’m chucking in The Doors:
There’s a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin’ like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang...
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
"Walla walla". Australian Aboriginal chant? "Bing bang". Play on the words "big bang". Aborigines are one of the oldest tribes on the planet. Big bang. That's really old. It's all very connected.
lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

I think that may be what happened too. If so it makes a very sad situation so much worse.
Carpe diem?
I live about thirty miles north of the accident site. Saturday night’s conditions were not good—patchy visibility and extremely slick. (My son did a 180 at 40 mph at midnight.) The news accounts of the accident are VERY confused—one story states that the car was going BACKWARDS when it hit the pole and that both front seats were broken and lying back. Very strange, if true.
I am from this area too and we ended up with about seven inches of snow during the snow event. Of course we are north of you.
The map really makes me wonder whether it wasn’t a carjacking. On a night with poor driving conditions, I’d expect parents of young children to drive directly home rather than drive several miles out of their way. If hubby were driving under some kind of threat, he might deliberately crash the car out of desperation. If the assailant and wife survived, he continued with his assault. Do we know whether there was clearly only one set of footprints? Sad situation.
