Brazil Marines join slum battles, 30 people killed

Armored cars rolled through smoke-filled streets in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday as police battled slum-based drug gangs for a fifth consecutive day in the city slated to host the 2016 Olympics.

Live TV coverage showed heavily armed police exchanging gunfire with suspected drug traffickers in the hilly shantytowns on the city outskirts.

Police targeted the Vila Cruzeiro slum in the northern part of the city, considered a stronghold of a gang thought to be behind ordering attacks.

At least 10 armored Marine vehicles, never before used in battles in the city's slums, or favelas, transported soldiers into Vila Cruzeiro, even as gangsters erected barriers. On television, a bus smoldered, smoke rising from a gutted shell.

"Our goal today is to take back ground from the drug traffickers. We're taking it back and rescuing society from its position as a hostage to the drug trade," said Colonel Alvaro Rodrigues of the military police and the head of the operation.

I was in Brazil in 2000. Most of the people live in slums. Very few people have a decent house. Taxes are high. Government is corrupt.

Sounds like you’re describing Kalifornia in about 10 years.

Without doing something to elevate these people from crushing poverty, this action is creating a void that will soon be filled.

Brazil is portrayed as this economic miracle. Compared to that socialist kleptocracy, Argentina, it is a free market wonder.

The quality of life in Brazil, unless you are very wealthy, is hell on earth.

Their illegals have flooded into FL. They get free healthcare and free everything. They wave their dumb flags and “love” Brazil - well then go the **** back if you love it so much.

Kill the poor to keep them in line. Unlike the poor here, these people have no rights. Brazilian illegals in America have endless rights, benefits and protections versus back in Brazil.

The Portuguese and the Belgians were among the worst colonialists in Africa. No one has any rights.

Preview of coming attractions in our major drug infested cities and along the Mexican border. Neither Republican or Democrat administrations have been serious about eradicating the drug menace.

When I see young white kids on COPS being arrested for being heroin users, it sickens me to think that these youngsters will be hooked on drugs for many years.

Also, 48 Hours has brief views of Miami’s drug infested ghettos with drugged addled skeletons standing around the street corners in petrified poses. Thank God I never got into drugs during my college days.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama said he would prefer Brazil’s government/economy.

Have you seen the movie, City of God, (strong warning as to content) as it was filmed about the very same gangs now fighting the law in Rio. It was jawdropping to see how close these favelas are to the breathtaking beach.

Yeah, and now even more-so that Obama would prefer ANY other government's economy than the one he's screwed up so horrifically since that campaign.

Somehow the US must be to blame for this. Probably overzealous law enforcement, the Arizona illegal aliens policy, or the war on drugs or war on terror.

Since the government there is socialist, this will not be drummed on every minute of every day until 2016, as it would be otherwise. Thanks, partisan media shills!
