CHERSKY, Russia – The Russian scientist shuffles across the frozen lake, scuffing aside ankle-deep snow until he finds a cluster of bubbles trapped under the ice. With a cigarette lighter in one hand and a knife in the other, he lances the ice like a blister. Methane whooshes out and bursts into a thin blue flame.
Gas locked inside Siberia's frozen soil and under its lakes has been seeping out since the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. But in the past few decades, as the Earth has warmed, the icy ground has begun thawing more rapidly, accelerating the release of methane — a greenhouse gas 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide — at a perilous rate.
Some scientists believe the thawing of permafrost could become the epicenter of climate change. They say 1.5 trillion tons of carbon, locked inside icebound earth since the age of mammoths, is a climate time bomb waiting to explode if released into the atmosphere.

Don’t worry. most of Russia’s Climate reporting stations have been shut down. Data from russia kept wrecking the models.

I guess none of this earth destroying Siberian methane existed during the Medieval warming period or Roman era warming period when the average earth temperature was warmer than today.

It seems we are all going to die from some environmental disaster.... but the type of impending disaster changes every 10 years.
Global cooling, population explosion, nuclear fallout/red rain, global warming now methane gas.
SOS different disaster.
Very strong evidence that this is all part of a natural cycle and that mankind and industrialization are off the hook. We can all relax.

I’m thinking collection, purification, compression and delivery to markets. This after all is the only fuel that is somewhat green and doesn’t have a decaying waste problem.
It’s good to hear that there is something much worse than CO2. Kind of put our emissions into perspective.
Stossel mentioned last night that grass fed beef is much worse for the environment than corn fed. Primarily because these cattle live 8 months longer and produce alot of methane.
Have a c1850 book....BIG dissertation on OODLES OF methane rising from the oceans.
In other words....THIS IS NOT NEW!!!
OR.... the extra CO2 could cause the world’s crop to produce EXTREMELY LARGE VOLUMES of food, solving the world’s food problem.
Excuse me! If all that methane was there, wherever there was, causing death bringing Global Warming, how the hell did it get frozen into the permafrost - and under all that ice yet?
