Extraordinary pictures of the aftermath of World War I, which have been hidden away for nearly a century, have been discovered in a vault in Paris.

The film is a part of a special BBC One programme that includes unique aerial photographs of the battlefield taken by British pilots.

Nick Higham reports on the footage that gives an amazing insight into history.

More of the footage can be seen on the BBC One programme 'The First World War from Above' on Sunday at 2100GMT.

New footage of World War I shows war-torn battlefields

I don't mean to nit-pick but isn't that redundant?

Amazing, My French Brother-in-law is named Prevot, same as the airship pilot. This is amazing footage and makes it seem so much more real.

Nice touch showing the daughter of the pilot shooting the film.

Her father died fighting in the French Resistance during WW2, and she was too young to remember him.

Having spent almost 32 years in uniform I’ve always had a great interest in military history. As the centennial anniversary of WW I approaches, I imagine there will be a lot of new shows on The Military Channel, The History Channel and its international cousin, The Discovery Channel and others. All this coincides with our planned retirement...assuming B Hussein hasn’t destroyed the economy. I’m sure my wife will have divorced me by 11/11/18, since she can’t stand it when I watch shows of this nature!

Ypres and Passchendaele. Three battles in four years in essentially the same place. First use of poison gas on the Western front in the first one. In the last one 140,000 men died for five miles of ground that was given back shortly afterward. It was a proving ground for industrial level slaughter. No wonder it looked like that.

Excellent filmed look at the devastation of World War One. A war removed from almost all living people’s experience, much as WWII is but a story (and film) to those born in the past 50 years. Another example of why Hollywood films about war rarely are close to realistic. It’s too difficult to portray the kind of brutal destruction and desolation that war brings to a nation and it’s people. However, as long as evil men try to conquer nations and make their people subservient to the will of tyrants, war will be with us.
