US presidential nuclear codes 'lost for months' [During Clinton administration]
BBC ^ | 2010-10-21 | Unattributed

The codes used by the president to launch a nuclear strike were mislaid for months during the Clinton administration, the former highest-ranking US officer has said.

[...]

Gen Shelton said the incident had taken place "around the year 2000".

Under the procedures, an official was sent every month to check the codes, and that they were replaced every four months with new codes.

According to Gen Shelton's book, Without Hesitation, an official had gone to check one month and been told by the aide that the codes were on the president's person but that he was in an important meeting and could not be disturbed.

A different official went to do the same check a month later and was told a similar story. When it came time to change the codes, an aide admitted they had been missing for months.

Gen Shelton said it was apparent that the president had not had the codes and that he had been unaware that an aide had lost them.

Some day among Monica Lewinsky’s belongings they will find the Code Sheet, with the following handwritten on the back.

“Wednesday-4pm. Back door, bring Pizza, no panties.”

This pretty much exemplifies the attitude of your basic democrat towards national security. We’re all damned lucky to still be here, after the succession of clowns we’ve had in the White House.

If the secret service had retraced willie clinton’s steps, they woulda found it under the desk.

Simply stunning. I consider this Treason. This punk, who wanted to buy him or herself some time, put the entire country in danger. The US essentially was nucleared disarmed without those codes.

From Dugald McConnell and Brian Todd, CNN
October 22, 2010 8:51 a.m. EDT

SNIPPET: “(CNN) — A former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says in a new book that while Bill Clinton was in the White House, a key component of the president’s nuclear launch protocol went missing.

“The codes were actually missing for months. This is a big deal,” says Gen. Hugh Shelton. “We dodged a silver bullet.””

I still think the Secret Service should have a look in Bill's humidor. He sure didn't keep his cigars there.

Thanks, Cindy. There is more information at the end this article:

Shelton said the president was given new codes within minutes when the previous codes could not be found. He said the procedures have been changed since then so that the Pentagon aide who carries out the monthly check is required to wait at the White House until he or she can visually confirm the codes are in the president's possession or an aide who is with him.

they were somewhere in the piles on Sandy Burglar’s messy desk that Clinton thought was so amusing

great, the nation’s security was in the farcically incompetent hands of Sandy Burglar and Bill Clinton while the nuclear codes were not only missing but the scumbags covered it up for as long as possible — better to have the USA immobilized in a nuclear crisis than to admit their incompetence to the DoD, huh?
