Can’t Take Their Eyes off Her - The Christine O’Donnell phenomenon
Weekly Standard ^ | 10/16/10 | Fred Barnes

. . .

The CNN debate was the “tipping point,” O’Donnell told me. This was before the new poll showed her gaining on Coons. “We shattered my opponent’s glass jaw,” she says. “You’re going to hear the glass falling on the floor.”

She won’t be lacking for money. Since the primary, she’s raised $4 million, enough to pay for “tougher” TV ads attacking Coons. “I believe he’s gotten a free ride so far.” Indeed he has. As a college senior, he wrote about being “a bearded Marxist.” It was a joke, he says, and the press has accepted his explanation at face value.

O’Donnell’s life has been scrutinized far more aggressively. It was discovered she had dabbled in witchcraft as a teenager, and reporters took this revelation seriously. So did O’Donnell in her first ad. “I’m not a witch,” she said. “I’m you.” The ad was controversial, but it more or less put the issue to rest.

Now we’re about to see “a whole new Christine O’Donnell,” she says. New or not, we’ll see a lot of her. She’s a political star, a celebrity, and the press can’t take its eyes off her.

This seems like an unusually positive article. It does seem like we're on a roll.

I guess if you can't beat them, join them. Three weeks ago The Weakly Standard was busy trashing O'Donnell in every op-ed piece on their website.

I’m pretty sure you have that right on the money.

Weekly Standard was certainly pro Castle.

Kristol trashed her, Barnes trashed her, Stephen Hayes trashed her, and Mary Katharine Ham wanted to trash her but took a more neutral position because she was getting an earful on Twitter and Facebook.

Heard her on Mark Levin tonight. She is a sharp lady, and oddly enough for a politician these days, seems to have a fair dose of common sense. I hope she slams the ‘rats in the election, she is exactly the kind of person we need in Congress.

Christine O’Donnell..have a difficult time becoming a fan, would like to but she just appeared too many times on Maher’s show always seeking the limelight in the media, no substance and I know much about nothing was taken from when she was younger but..I can't climb on board on this one at this point. The feeling I get when I watch her. I turn her off. The education controversy, what's really true and what's not, the 2010 IRS back taxes..a real hodge-podge of information (or mis, who can tell?).

I think the Tea Party won't pull this one off and may be hurt by this quick to support, as Palin. Has nothing to do with the witch craft and/or anatomical self-induced therapy. It's all ongoing: I promise to cut this.. babble and he's a Marxist etc--evolution is made up...but let the schools decide.. blah blah.

Can she run a company? What's more a state? Has she ever run anything, done anything which has made for job creation?

I think it comes down to looking at her own published BIO, her web page and reading really nothing of substance..then having to actually resort to a "shaky" wikipedia bio, am stumped why she would be more or even as qualified than anyone here reading this post.

Had to have been someone better who could have run. Maybe being a little bitty state; but nevertheless, albeit a corporate island in of its own, there is surprisingly not much to choose from?

Well, what do you think? They’ve come around? What do you think that’s about?

I’m guessing the choice of debate prep coaches was reassuring to them.

She definitely is. She really is the one that conservatives should all want.

I think the elites in the media are guided by polls, and Kristol and Barnes didn’t want to be dropped off the cocktail circuit. Despite their best efforts to trash her, O’Donnell didn’t get involved with that nonsense. She’s smart, she’s focused and she’s a hell of a lot better for this country than some pencil-necked Marxist.

Senators don't run states, governors do. All she has to do is cast a conservative vote and she will do just that. Christine is FAR better than Castle or Coons, it was NOT a mistake in any way for the Tea Party to support her it was absolutely the RIGHT thing to do. She may very will win this, we will see. In any case though, the Tea Party did right, and Rove and gang did wrong. Go Christine! Go Sarah!

I don't live there..am glad I do not under these circumstances. I guess you just go with the remaining [R] left standing at this point..that's not a reason to elect anyone if they show they have never brought anything to the table in the past.

Good luck on this one, was just my opinion and I could be entirely wrong--and will just listen to "the feeling".

Convince me she has done something...anything..made a difference?

Well, if you don’t like O’Donnell, you can support that pencil-necked Marxist Coons or write in the name of that RINO scum Mike Castle.

She has fought hard for things like saving the life of someone who was in a Terri Schiavo situation.

Again, all she needs to do as a Senator is vote right.

Christine is a GOOD person. Coons is EVIL. Is that sufficient for you?

Christine tries to keep people from getting killed. Saves lives.
Coons poisons people. See PFOA and Gore-tex and Coons.

Good vs Evil.

Senators don’t run states. They vote. That’s all she has to do. Just vote, while listening carefully to her constituency, and not being corrupted by the DC Dazzle. I think she can do that. It’s not rocket science. Will her vote be better on any given day than Coons? Guaranteed. This is a no brainer. Wish I had her to vote for. In my state, Illinois (blushing with shame), we only have a mega-RINO, Mark Kirk. OK with the idea of sucking the brains out of babies. Voted for Cap & Tax before he didn’t like it anymore. Seriously. Can we trade candidates?

Yes I know she is not running a state..but she is representing her state at a higher level?? You have not said what she has done. No one can. Rove and others may not have been wrong. I said that at the onset as well. Just tell me why she is qualified, as this is what is holding her back?? Her BIO is about her past not what she promises for the future--it's poor.

Understand I want a R in there but gimme a break..we cant be always led around because the Tea Party and Palin said so..they could be wrong just once??

It's like choosing the last kid when making up teams.
