He claimed that the average man burned 1380 calories per day in the 1980s and continues to do so today. The average woman has burned 950 calories a day during the same period. What has changed is that calorie intake has increased by at least a third to on average 3,500 calories a day, he said.

That difference is enough to put on 221 pounds every year at 3500 excess calories per pound. Not buying that. But it does take only 10 calories extra per day to put on one extra pound in a year.
If I eat 2000 calories a day I usually loose about 2 pounds a week without any change in exercise, so that means my normal calorie usage is around 3000, not the quoted 1380.

To much debt is caused by spending to much on stupid studies like this

I believe it likely took $1m just to determine average activity levels over time, then ANOTHER $1m to calculate caloric intake over the same period. Good research always costs lots of money...
Its a No Brainer, burn off more than you take in!
Studies by the Masters of Schmart, the same ones who decided that studies on how to train Africans to clean their uncircumcised genitals after sex are important enough that Americans should pay for it. Next theyll have K-12 students learning that its important to learn how pray to Allah for peace of mind and eating nuts dates, basil and mint is healthy living.
How about going back to mandatory Physical-Ed, instead of Butt Boy & Lizard Training Programs.
The problem with obesity is the problem with everything else in modern society. People are taught they should go for instant gratification without having to restrain their appetites.
They have never developed the mental muscles of self-control, and that becomes evident in all aspect of their lives.
Also you can use the same rising curve for diabetes.
A similar curve also represents certain corpos increase in incomes.
The numbers needed a day seem wrong.

This site says I need 2536 a day being sedentary.
Also the number suggested for women (950) is below the number many diet and exercise site say not to go below (around 1200).
These are just round figures.
