Back-to-school checklist: Whiter teeth & tattoos
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Shopping for back-to-school "basics" used to mean T-shirts, jeans, socks and some notebooks. This year, parents added a few other things with one item that really stands out: tattoos.
About 45% of parents polled say that hair highlights, teeth whitening, even tattoos are among the items they will buy their kids to go back to school, according to a new American Express Spending & Saving Tracker survey.
The survey tracks parents' school-related spending intentions.
Haircuts led the list of services that mom and dad are treating junior to before the first day of school. But they are also willing to indulge their kids with a few extras.
According to the report, 18% of parents intended to buy teeth whitening services.
And 9% of parents were willing to pay for tattoos for their kids. On average, parents were spending about $70 on tattoos and teeth whitening, versus $40 on average for their kid's haircut.

Ping! A suitable candidate for the “Another Reason...” list, perhaps.
$40 for the average kid’s haircut? We spent $7.99 at Great Clips.
Insanity rules.
Any parent who buys their child a Tattoo is guilty of Child abuse in my opinion, and Yes I know my opinion isn’t worth much.
If the kid wants a Tattoo that badly they can find a job and buy it themselves,Nothing like mutilating your beautiful daughters back with a Tramp Stamp.
One needs to look at the Tattoo to Tooth ratio of these parents to understand that among those with a high Tattoo to Tooth ratio, this is normal behavior.
Know what you mean. But you have to look at the source of the poll too...American Express Spending & Saving Tracker survey.
We spend 12.00 at Fantastic Sam’s for adult cuts.
I understand getting your child’s hair cut because a lot of parents (me) have allowed it to grow during the summer. However, the price tag seems really steep unless it is for several kids and the tip. Tattoos and tooth whitening? Okay, that is just plain crazy. I agree that any parent who allows a PERMANENT tat on a child is guilty of child abuse. Fashion and styles change... believe me, when I showed my kids my hair-do during the 80’s (and it was really nice THEN) you heard laughing and laughing. My point to them is don’t ever do something permanent because it changes. Just a thought
If you average boys and girls haircuts, a $40.00 avg sounds about right.
I’m from another generation entirely (probably another planet). I shave my head over the compost pile and scars suffice for tattoos. The offspring know that getting tattoos will result in their death - at my hands.
Don’t forget the delightful piercings. /s
I’m reminded of the Sam Cady line from the Robert DeNiro remake of Cape Fear. When asked about his highly tattooed body, Cady, a recent parolee from the joint replied, “There’s nothing else to do in prison except desecrate your flesh.”

Agreed. The tats are a huge turnoff for me.
The great dumbing down of America continues. Looks like we are into the second generation. Lord, please have mercy on us.
As my Dad used to say, we need a "knot jerked in our tails."
Dude, no kids cut should be over $10. I spend $15 and that includes tip.

Nothing like spending all their money on the shallow and superficial, huh? Hope these people understand that after the red carpet entrance the main purpose of school is academics. Except for here in Texas where the main purpose of high school is football, sigh.

Satan hates the temple of God.
