(WXYZ) DEARBORN, Mich. - Fordson High School football is accustomed to the spotlight, but it’s usually because of their championship teams. This time they’re in the headlines because of their practice schedule.

For the first time in over two decades the Muslim holy month of Ramadan fell during an intense stretch of pre-season practice. Because most of the team is Muslim, and Muslim’s cannot eat or drink during daylight during Ramadan, the football coach decided to move practices to the middle of the night.

Where is the aclu? We can't pray before football games, but this public school can change their practice schedule to accommodate muslims?

There has got to be a way to get the liberals to fight this invasion.

I know, let’s start a pro-choice, homosexual Islamic Cult that wears condom vests!

I’m actually glad this happened.

No, really. A lot of high school sports fans fall into the politically ignorant category, but will start to notice when Islam infects their sports. Whatever it takes to get people up in arms, I say.

Let the Muslims hang themselves.

Who is paying for the electric lights for the field during this bend over practice session for accomodation for a special religion?

Because most of the team is Muslim...

This makes perfect sense. How many teams have games and practices on Sundays? Why not? Because out of respect for the prevalent Christian beliefs, the schools honor the Christian 'day of rest'.

As "most of the team is Muslim" the coach is showing the same level of respect to Muslims as they do Christians.

So, is this a case of "Freedom for me, but not for thee"?

If I were an opposing team, I’d smear bacon grease on the ball carriers jerseys and see if the muzzies would tackle them.

Do they set off IEDs after every touchdown? Are the losers beheaded after the game? Do they allow goats and small boys in the locker room at half-time? Are cheerleaders who are raped stoned to death on the 50 yard line? Are gays used as tackling dummies during practice? Just wondering.

You are a kook.
Virtually every pro team plays on Sundays and HS sports dont usually do that because there is no easy way to get all of the players in to practice on weekends.
There is no “for us” at all.
Even a team prayer isnt allowed - might offend a muslim or an atheist.

Some public schools and universities are granting Muslim requests for prayer times, prayer rooms and ritual foot baths, prompting a debate on whether Islam is being given preferential treatment over other religions.

The University of Michigan at Dearborn is planning to build foot baths for Muslim students who wash their feet before prayer. An elementary school in San Diego created an extra recess period for Muslim pupils to pray.

At George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Muslim students using a “meditation space” laid out Muslim prayer rugs and separated men and women in accordance with their Islamic beliefs.

Critics see a double standard and an organized attempt to push public conformance with Islamic law.

“What (school officials) are doing … is to give Muslim students religious benefits that they do not give any other religion right now,” says Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel at the Thomas More Law Center, an advocacy group for Christians.

An Anaheim, California, public high school is facing a day in federal court after refusing to allow a Christian Bible club to meet after school.

The Esperanza High School official responsible for after-school groups told the students that their group was being denied permission to meet because their topic was not related to the school curriculum. Attorney Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) in Sacramento, is not buying that excuse.

“The school district refused to allow a Christian Bible club from being able to meet on campus [in] the same [way] as other non-curriculum related clubs,” he contends. “No student and no club should be treated like second-class citizens simply because they aspire to study the Bible and believe in Christianity.”

Yeah! Cause we all know how tolerant Muslims are in the countries they control.

We are talking High School, not Pro. However, many HS teams do have practice on Saturdays .... so why not Sundays?

If you can't debate without tossing insults, you already know you have no point or you are incapable of intellectually defending your statement.

While I think that we are pandering to Muslims too much in this country, I don't agree with this argument. Just because Muslim countries are some of the most intolerant places in the world, doesn't mean that we should follow in their footsteps. We are better than that.

If most of the students are Muslim, then following a practice schedule amenable to their religous faith seems like a no-brainer. In most major cities, religous holidays of the majority stakeholders are reflected in school calenders.
I used to have Wednesday afternoons off from public elementary school for Catechism classes. Try and find a school with 100% attendance during Succoth.

Lighten up folks. Let the kids enjoy their sports.

BTW- Why anyone would live in Dearborn, or Michigan generally is beyond me. Sorry all you Huskies.

I see nothing wrong with moving team practice to a time when “most of the team” can practice. That is the entire basis of this article.

Now, what you are also mentioning is where you and I are in lock-step agreement. Sorry, my taxdollars no more will pay for a foot-bath than it will go to fund a Jewish, Christian or Wiccan religous article. When you are talking about my taxdollars - then we have agreement.

But, the coach is trapped. Either not practice and lose his job (his win/loss record impacts his employment) or practice at night to accomodate “most of the team” and face ridicule from the public.

Again, our local high schools have practice on Saturdays as well as the school week. There is no practice on Sundays, out of respect for the predominant Christian faith. The coaches know that if they hold practice on Sunday, there will be a revolt and he’ll have a majority of the team not allowed to show up.

This ‘concession’ is only logical.

If public schools made concessions to Christians, that would be fine. They don’t. We can’t pray at football games even though the vast majority of those in attendance have no problem with it. Promoting islam will prove to not be healthy for America.
