JUNEAU, Alaska - Authorities said Tuesday that a plane believed to be carrying eight people has crashed in southwest Alaska.
Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said the Guard was called to the area about 20 miles north of Dillingham at about 7 p.m. Monday after a passing aircraft saw the wreckage.
Hayes says there are possible fatalities. State and federal officials say severe weather has hampered the rescue operation.
Hayes says about five good Samaritans were on scene early Tuesday helping the crash victims. He says he was told by Alaska State Troopers that there were "eight or nine" people on board, though a spokeswoman for the troopers, Megan Peters, refused to comment.
The aircraft is a 1957 DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter registered to Anchorage-based communications company GCI, the Federal Aviation Administration told the Anchorage Daily News. A woman at the Regional Operations Center told The Associated Press all further information was pending notification of next of kin.
Dillingham is located in northern Bristol Bay, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens was reportedly traveling to a GCI-owned lodge in the area and friends are concerned he may have been on the downed plane.

Hope to God they can get them out and get them treated quickly. These people are way, way outside the Golden Hour.
It could be Fox hates to interrupt their programming, but I think it is because they hate to get it wrong, as initial reports usually are. Every time Fox has something wrong they get hammered, so, they verify before going with initial reports.
Just my thought, as the MSM and their hounds attack at the slightest Fox error, whereas all the other networks and CNN are given a pass.
I have to leave shortly, FOX is just starting to get into this, for the last couple of hours they wouldn’t even mention who was aboard.
We should get the facts and hopefully good news very soon now.
I have a feeling Ted survives, he is an Alaskan survivor of a plane crash himself that killed his wife back in 1978.
>> Fox is reviewing the bio of Stevens as if he is already dead. I guess thats all they can say right now. <<
Fox and other news orgs probably know already exactly who was killed. But they won’t make the annoucement(s) until next-of-kin have been notified.
Maybe thats all true, but FNC does a piss-poor job on breaking news more often than not.
I knew when they first reported it, someone on note was onboard. What a tragedy for all.
We only had rain in Juneau. The other ports were fine. Weather temperature was beautiful I take 60 degree weather over this 90 degree and high humidity weather we are experiencing in Chicago.
That sure was a loud aircraft.
Dave Dittman, a former aide and longtime family friend of former Sen. Ted Stevens says Stevens was killed in a plane crash near Dillingham Monday night.

There’s a stage play called “Charlie Victor Romeo” that reenacts CVR recordings. It’s supposed to be amazing, if harrowing. The Air Force actually recorded a performance and uses it in training.

i’m looking for a Ranchero to restore don’t matter what year really i just loved the ranchero .....
Definitely, but not after we went to the new high-bypass engines. Twice the thrust, 11% of the noise. Man, I love technology!
Not to mention we would never hear the end of it, national holiday would no doubt follow. LOL

How weird!
Lord have mercy (#35), LucyT.
Sad news any way ya cut it.
Regardless the passengers onboard and reputations .. don’t expect a Wellstone memorial event from the GOP.
Question: Will he be accorded the honor to lay in state at the Capitol?
Condolences to the families of those who perished..
They release the odd one here and there, but only a tiny fraction. They usually release transcripts though but often incomplete as well.
Try to find say, the full CVR of AK261. It’s not released. The transcript it, and the ATC part is, but not the plane’s CVR. That’s how it is in 95% or more of crashes.
Have the Daily POS or DU or HuffingtonPuffingtonPost or PMSNBC tried to blame this on the Palins yet? /sarc>
NO cheers, unfortunately.
