With the GOP primary just a month away, U.S. Sen. John McCain is pulling further away from rival J.D. Hayworth, and Rasmussen Reports is no longer listing the incumbent senator as vulnerable to an upset from his conservative challenger.
A Rasmussen Reports poll released on July 26 showed McCain with a 54-34 lead over Hayworth. Rasmussen conducted the automated push-button telephone poll of 595 likely Republican primary voters on July 21.
Seven percent of respondents said they would vote for another candiate, and 6 percent said they were unsure who they would cast their ballots for in the Aug. 24 primary.
McCains leads have varied wildly depending on the poll, with Rasmussen giving him an 11-percent lead in January and the Behavior Research Center showing him up by a whopping 45 points in mid-July. But every poll shows the four-term senator pulling away from his conservative challenger.
While many of Rasmussens previous polls described McCain as potentially vulnerable because his support consistently hovered around 50 percent, usually a bad sign for an incumbent. Rasmussen noted that McCains approval numbers were similar to those of U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who lost in Pennsylvanias Democratic primary.
But unlike Specters challenger, U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, Rasmussen said Hayworth is not gaining any ground on his opponent.
That comparison no longer works, Rasmussen wrote of the Hayworth-Specter comparison. In the Arizona match-up, Hayworth is falling further behind in the final month before the primary.

Well Sarah needs to be blamed when he reverts back. Sadly he’s her toady now.

Thank you Sarah Palin, McCains lap dog with lipstick. She has now lost my vote.
He’s Vulnerable until the Vote is counted not the poll crap.
Another of Palin’s Amnesty queens. How nice.
Hes Vulnerable until the Vote is counted not the poll crap.

Dewey Beats Truman
Can the people of Arizona really be that stupid? Or does this stink of more Soros money?
I would have to say that this is a sign of the end coming fast.
The only reason for the debates were to give McCain a shot at getting people to forget his actual history, and go with his new self-invented story.
Are people in Arizona really this gullible and stupid?
The people in AZ seem to be easily swayed by Palin who has really not proved anything so far. Or perhaps they like representatives who reach across the political aisle.
>>> Well Sarah needs to be blamed when he reverts back. Sadly hes her toady now
Your opinion of Hayworth must be lower then mine if you blame this on Sarah. It was up to Hayworth to persuade the people to support him. If one or two comments months ago from Palin overshadow his record of twenty years, don’t you think the the voters would have rejected him anyway.
Just an observation.
Here’s the deal, yes, people are that stupid. 40% of Republicans are basically liberals, they don’t even know it themselves but they are in agreement with liberal values and vote for liberals in the Republican party (which is most of them). Only 10% of Americans are true conservatives.
I think AZ voters prefer conservative lite.
That and the fact that he’s able to use his $$ ($17M) left over from his unsuccessful presidential campaign. JD has no where near that amount to run counter-attack ads. Sad that AZ could be this stoopid.
The two debates seemed to have the opposite effect for Hayworth.
What a shame that AZ can’t retire the old geezer. But, SC didn’t retire Graham. They must like what they got.
Maybe Hayworth should make a commercial about all the votes McCain was absent for during the last decade, as he ran his presidental campaign. That is how much he represented AZ.
