CARACAS Venezuela broke off diplomatic ties with Colombia Thursday in a worsening row over public accusations from Bogota that it was providing a safe haven to leftist guerrillas.
"I announce with a tear in the heart: Venezuela breaks off from this moment all relations with the government of Colombia," Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told reporters in his presidential palace in Caracas.
The announcement marked a fresh spike in tensions between the South American neighbors, which went to the brink of war in 2008 over a Colombian military raid into Ecuador to destroy a cross-border rebel camp.
Colombia, Washington's staunchest military ally in the region, and Venezuela, a Cuban ally that has accumulated an arsenal of modern Russian warplanes and weapons, have frequently quarreled over the past few years.
The putative help Chavez is accused of giving Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas has fueled much of the ill-will.

Will no one rid them of this evil man?
With a proper president, we would sever relations with Venezuela, Iran and a dozen or more evil regimes.
Oops. America is ruled by an evil regime!
Chavez is such a clown...no wonder the left loves him so.
If Chavez proceeded to get the snot stomped out of him, what would the bammer do? Send in Oliver Stone?
that has accumulated an arsenal of modern Russian warplanes and weapons,
They may have some but can they use them.
The best thing for the people of Venezuela would be for Hugo to start something with Colombia. Two weeks and Chavez will be on a plane to Cuba.
Years ago I spent time in Columbia and I can tell you their army is top notch. Those are some tough hombres who are well trained and very well disciplined. They know how to fight guerrillas and another army. Hugo’s pendejos are better trained to quell civil unrest and keep their own people from uprising. Chavez knows he would get his butt kicked if he picked a fight with a real military.
In a war between Venezuela and Columbia Chavez would have two problems.
1. The western states of Venezuela and in particular Zulia are passionately anti Chavez and would see Columbia not as an enemy but a liberator. Many of the civilians would actively support Columbia and fight against Chavez and his thugs. Thus in addition to a military force Chavez would also have a guerrilla war going on against him.
2. Columbia has a well armed, motivated and disciplined force of trained soldiers. Chavez has a well armed force of trained thugs to keep their own countrymen in fear. Thugs always lose a battle against a good military force.
Like no one saw this coming. I hope 0 doesn’t feel the need to castigate Colombia’s president and the behest of his BFF Chavez.
Very good news.
FYI!
Obama would bluster and do little else. Castro, on the other hand, might get involved. If that were to happen Obama would have to make a decision. I’m not sure he can do that.
Hugo has made many enemies—if there is war between these two South American nations—it will be the end of Hugo. War would end his rule and he will be lucky if he escapes with his skin.
Never, ever underestimate the commies ability to shoot themselves in the foot.
It was only a matter of time. Chavez is probably thinking his military is strong enough now to invade Colombia and take it over.
If forced to choose between backing Columbia or Chavez in an armed conflict, I honestly think Obama would back Chavez.
everyone here laffs at Chavez but there is dark days ahead for Colombia I think. Should Chavez attack most Colombians think the S will help them......sadly Im 100% obama will side with the Monkey Boy.

Chavez thinks he is the reincarnation of Simon Bolivar, whose destiny is to unite all of Latin America, that has been his goal since Day 1.
