Ex-Georgia secretary of state Karen Handel has nabbed a spot in the Republican runoff for governor.
With 64 percent of precincts reporting, unofficial returns show Handel had 32 percent of the vote. Her candidacy has been buoyed by the backing of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
There was a furious three-way battle behind her for the second runoff spot.
Former U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal had 25 percent of the vote. Former state Sen. Eric Johnson had 19 percent of the vote, while state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine had 18 percent.
They were among seven Republicans vying for their party's nomination. A runoff is needed if no candidate wins 50 percent plus one vote.
The runoff winner will face Democratic winner Roy Barnes in the fall.

I’ve never said a bad word against Sarah. I’ve supported her. I’ve taken her past endorsements with a grain of salt (due to circumstances). She is doing great things for conservatism by speaking out against the wrongdoing of the current administration, and more.
But, in this case, she just plain got it wrong IMO. I don’t hate her, I still support her, I haven’t given up on her. If she’s the Republican choice for prez, I will vote for her.
I believe a lot of us in GA are just disappointed right now. Let the blue states pick the lesser of two evils, there’s no excuse for a conservative state to pick the least conservative of 7 candidates.

Thats the way I see it as well.I raised hell with 10 people today to go vote.And yes I plugged for Deal.9 out of the 10 voted for Deal with one going for Johnson.I will try and do better next time.

Just as a point of history, the first tea party here in GA was on a cold Feb day right after the Rick Santelli (of CNBC) rant from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange went viral and really kicked the whole thing off nationally.

It appears from the Wiki entry that the date for that first national round of Tea Parties was February 27, 2009.
There were about 400-500 of us on the steps of the state capitol on a cold, rainy February day. And I mean it *rained*, it wasn’t a little drizzle or anything. Many of the state legislators who came out to look at the crowd looked pretty darned surprised to see us, it was a real “what the heck is THIS!?” moment for them, to have that many P.O.’ed citizens on their doorstep in such ugly conditions.
The next big one here in GA was of course the one on 4/15/2009, and in particular the one at the state house, but with many others around the state, like yours in Warner Robbins.
And now, looking again at your post, it appears you meant the first *tax day* tea party. Ah well, I’ll post the above anyway, it’s not a bad vignette for people to learn of / be reminded of.

All I need to remember is wsb and other local news depicting her as the enemy when she chaired the Fulton county commission and was pushing reforms there.
All the other nominees were inside baseball backslappin’ good ole boys and most had some sort of ethics cloud. Go Karen and Go Sarah
I voted for Johnson yesterday. I had not made up my mind until yesterday morning. I went back and read his comments during debates and interviews. As a voter, it’s awful to have one voice in your head saying, “Vote for the one who best embodies your conservative principles” (particularly on govt. healthcare repeal and immigration) and the other voice saying, “Vote for someone who can actually beat Barnes.” Sometimes they’re not one and the same, which is what gets us into this RINO mess.
That pretty much sums it up.
Assuming Handel wins the runoff, it will be "interesting" to see if Georgia's Single Issue Republicans are going to ride the bomb all the way to the ground and allow Barnes to win.
A lot to factor in, I guess. Rand Paul had a fair shot, and he’s conservative. Maybe Palin realizes she can nudge for rock-ribbed conservatives in some cases.
Wow. It's amazing how arrogant some people, especially conservatives, are when it comes to other conservatives. I assume you are on her staff and know what criteria she uses to rate candidates to support? You work for the research firm, perhaps?

And what criteria, pray tell, does the research firm use to vet candidates? Most conservative? Strongest constitutionalist? Most Christian values? Electability?
Most important, John Oxendine didn’t make the runoff. Handel is my choice, but either her or Deal would be acceptable.

I don’t know any of the candidates for governor personally. The only things I can go by are their public records, public statements and the opinions of people who know them better than I do. You end up with lots of anecdotal evidence and conjecture. But most of the time with politicians who are not incumbents that’s all you have to go on.
Georgia politics are dominated by the Atlanta metro area. That has not always been good for this state. Handel is another politician from Atlanta.
Handel lied about supporting Log Cabin Republicans. I have a hard time agreeing with the FReepers on this thread that are trying to spin that as some kind of good thing.
Supporting Planned Parenthood in any way, shape or form puts you on the wrong side of social issues.
If you look at the discussion threads from the last few weeks many people who have personally dealt with her office say she is not a very good executive.
She skipped the debates. Politically, that may have been smart because obviously didn’t need to be there to win. But her lame excuse was that she would not appear on the same stage as McBerry, who is accused of misconduct with a female student. And Roy Barnes is a sleezy democrat political crook. Will she refuse to be on stage with him if she wins the runoff?
The sad part is I may end up voting for her in the runoff. Deal has some glowing reviews from people in his district but I think 17 years in congress pretty much disqualifies anyone for any executive position. And I think it’s very convenient that Deal ‘saw the light’ and jumped parties right after the 1994 elections. But I keep getting told he’s been a really good conservative since then.
Vote for whoever you want in the runoff, just don't be one of those suicidal conservatives who refuses to vote Republican in the General because of your "unshakeable principles". That is a formula for the reincarnation of Governor Barnes.
Fair or not, this is simply not a good time to be perceived as a white male backslappin' good 'ol boy who's been in politics too long. Politics ain't pretty...or fair.
As I stated earlier in this thread I voted for McCain. I did it with puke in my mouth, but he was better than the alternative. Same thing applies to whoever runs against Roy Barnes.
