A year after public downfall, SC governor thrives.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The governor who became the butt of late-night jokes for "hiking the Appalachian Trail" may be having the last laugh.

A year after South Carolina's Mark Sanford tearfully confessed an extramarital affair, the Republican has won a major state budget victory and seen his hand-chosen candidate nominated to succeed him. He's even won standing ovations from Republicans who months ago called for his resignation.

"There are any number of different levels of ironies," Sanford allowed earlier this week at a Republican breakfast to recognize the party's slate of candidates in November.

Disagree. Sanford is still considered a joke in South Carolina. At a meeting in Charleston only a few months ago, the band spontaneously started playing “Don't Cry for Me Argentina.” The crowd guffawed. Sanford was not amused.

Haley won because of Sarah Palin’s endorsement and not because of Mark Sanford's, though his ex wife's endorsement probably also helped.

Yes, he is. He’ll never be able to run away from that bumbling and embarrassing apology he delivered after getting exposed as a liar and adulterer.

That’s because he is a Republican, had he been a Dem who lied about the environment and screwed around on his wife, he would only get a days coverage on page 26 under the classified adds.

He is absolutely a viable candidate. He could win many senate seats across the nation and possibly the presidency. All he has to do is become a democrat where character doesn’t matter. But then he’ll need to switch to a tax and spend liberal, but that appears pretty easy to do for most politicians.

If character really mattered half or more of the elected officials in America would be out on their head. Sanford did wrong and will most assuredly pay but his agenda was and is still right on. Had the legislature in South Carolina listened we would b in much, much better shape. I make no excuses for his running around but be careful what you say. Even old Saint Gore wanted to try it.

What do you think of Obummer.90% of what he has said is a lie and remember Larry Sinclair. America elected a figment of the imagination.

Thanks for commenting -- I was simply shocked when I saw this title, that weirdo Sanford "thrives" -- that's nonsense, as nobody who is a Big Joke can be said to be thriving. Maybe the author owes the guv a favor or something?

In this age of Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Eliot Spitzer, et. al., such personal and political scandals can be used to garner public sympathy. However, it’s important to hold a press conference, confess to moral turpitude, cry, express regret, and, if possible, have one’s betrayed spouse at one’s side. Such shamelss behavior is now so commonplace that even Rasputin could appear worthy of continued public service. As Yogi would say, these continual televised soap opera scenes have now beome “deja vu all over again.”

He basically did what any fighter should do tell the opponent to FOff. If you can’t have a Saint at least elect a fighter that is conservative.

I think that is one thing Sanford cannot do. He seems to be a real conservative except in matters of family. He has a weakness of the same sort as Bill Clinton in that area, although Sanford appears to have much better taste than Clinton.
