Gloria Steinem, an icon of the womens movement, has criticized Sarah Palin for trying to brand herself as a feminist.
In an interview with @katiecouric, Steinem argued that a woman who chooses not to have an abortion can call herself a feminist, but you can't be a feminist who says other women can't have an abortion."
To be sure, Palins role as a feminist has been an issue ever since she made history by becoming the first woman to run on the Republican national ticket. Unlike the Democratic side of feminism, however, Palin is a conservative and opposes many of the issues such as abortion and gender rights that fueled the womens movement.
Palin, who is strongly anti-abortion, reignited the debate over who could call themselves a feminist and what that means in a May 14 speech for the Susan B. Anthony List, a PAC for antiabortion female congressional candidates.
Using grizzly bears as a metaphor, Palin seemed to imply that feminism need not apply only apply to liberal supporters of abortion rights. Conservative PTA moms can be empowered in their positions as well and can call themselves feminists, she argued.

She married it.
This is one of the things that always angers me about “feminists” who hate Palin. The essence of feminism is that women should have the power to make the choices that direct their lives.
Palin has made the choices that work for her— and no feminist should criticize her for it.
I was a stay at home mom when my children were young and that was important to me. We worked hard to ensure I could stay home and we did without. All the “enlightened” people we knew treated me like I had no brain.
Sarah Palin is a working mom who found a supportive husband who actively parents the children. She continues to work, raise her children, make choices according to her conscience, contribute to her country as a productive citizen, and fearlessly speaks her mind whenever she feels like it.
That’s my idea of a feminist. And that’s what we need to throw back in their faces when feminists complain about her. She’s living out her own personal choices in her own unique way. She’s a truly “empowered” woman.
I guess at the root it really is about the right to kill babies.
adjure = abjure
What was I thinking!
stupid is as stupid does... go for it...
Yikes! She looks like a shrunken apple head.
She's a day late and a dollar short.
Well, would change that a bit:
. . .it began with Betty Friedan - the real (and really ugly) Mother of modern Feminism (who, if alive, might look today, like Helen Thomas' twin.)
Betty's call to Feminism began with her communist roots; and she was an active and influential participant of American Communist movement. The 'Feminine Mystique' was cleverly enriched by Betty's world view and it created the 'tidal wave' of mainstream Leftism/Socialism in America. Interesting that her Communist commitments were never seriously made note of, until after her death.
All to say; Feminism began with an ugly side; both by it's author; and it's 'communist' influences, cleverly embedded.
(Betty was questioned by McCarthy in House Hearings per Un-American Activities as well - but this not ever mentioned on her FM book jacket or book reviews or her early bio info, for that matter.)
Oh, OK and yes; and in which case, a movement we can all appreciate as a moral move forward - in consciousness; at least per 'women's Right-to-Vote'. Here, we had a step forward per 'civilizing' a society and body politic.
OTHO; along with the good that Betty's thesis rode on; there was embedded in her 'ideals' and intentions; the 'communist ideal'. Her voice carried it; the Feminist disciples immersed themselves in it; and 'change' happened; good; bad - and ugly.
The bad was America' firmament changed - for the worse. It was the misunderstanding and fraudulent labeling of 'power' that sent Thelma and Louise off the cliff - and by which, eventually, a more authentic Feminism replaced it.
Glora it seems; never got the phone call or the 'knock on the door'. . .
