WASHINGTON -- Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications is a civil liberties trade-off the U.S. government must make to beef up national security, the nation's homeland security chief said Friday.

As terrorists increasingly recruit U.S. citizens, the government needs to constantly balance Americans' civil rights and privacy with the need to keep people safe, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Napolitano said it is wrong to believe that if security is embraced, liberty is sacrificed.

She added, "We can significantly advance security without having a deleterious impact on individual rights in most instances. At the same time, there are situations where trade-offs are inevitable."

BS!

“Big Sis” is just following orders from her Master to take down the primary means of communication for the Tea Partiers and the 9-12/Patriot groups.

Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications

So monitor it. Internet traffic is open-protocol.

But what you are REALLY talking about is SHUTTING IT DOWN TO DISSENT.

Big SISS has no clue what a can of worms she is opening.

No clue.

There is no illusion about what they attempt, and it is so against the grain for “We the People” that it will not stand. It will Not.

Don’t think so. From what I have read it must be a technical issue. I could only gain access through the fixed IP for the DNS.

Searched the web, and guess where the most discussion of the problem was? On DU. Some there knew that it could be accessed with the numeric IP address. Speculation there was that FR had changed Hosts and the address change had not filtered through all the networks.

I knew a guy, conservative as all get out, former cop, who voted for Kerry and against Bush because of the patriot act. I understand his thinking. Still couldn’t vote for Kerry but.....

I strongly suggest developing alternate ways to communicate, be it simple e-mail to trusted posters to going so far as getting a ham radio or shortwave.

They(guess who) desperately want FR shutdown, its too big of an obstacle and has the ability to organize opposition to the Obama agenda very quickly.

ARPA created the Internet to survive a nuclear attack.

It may not survive the treason and politics of the
undocumented, antiAmerican, Obama administration.

My knowledge of how the net works is pretty much limited to...... Check all my connections, if good, call the provider. I guess with everything soetoro and his minions have been up to, my tinfoil hat was a little too tight today.

So monitor it. Internet traffic is open-protocol.

She knows it's open protocol - her statement is a form of intimidation. She's telling us to watch out - to quit communicating with each other - to voluntarily give up our free speech rights. I suspect leftist groups aren't worried... For liberals it's always 1984.

EMP is bad stuff. Solid state that is connected to wire via power supply or network is very easily fried. (smoked)

Yeah, Janet, how about we monitor how close you are to any act affecting our national security, divide that number in feet by the number of stairs you can climb without having a coronary, multiply that quotient by $47, buy you a new outfit at JC Penney, and send you someplace nice where we’ll never have to hear from you again?

Internet Monitoring Needed to Fight Homegrown Terrorism

Yes...this is a big turd...much bigger than THIS....and we need Congress to give it too us to protect America from home grown terrorist like FR...and Tea Baggers....as a matter of fact we used a prototype on FR on 6-20-10 to test its viability...shut them down most of the day...
