A DEADLY terrorist weapon could be buried in the backyards of Darwin's northern suburbs, US scientists fear.

US authorities say melioidosis - commonly known as Nightcliff Gardeners Disease - is a potential bioterror threat.

The US Government believes the tropical disease, caused by soil-dwelling bacteria, could become the next anthrax-style bioterrorism threat.

Maybe it will ‘evolve’ into something less harmful.

Hmmmm.... it sounds like a potentially high mortality rate ...

While mortality rates in Melioidisis patients have dropped from 30 per cent to 15 per cent in Australia in recent years because of improvements in intensive care treatment, it is hoped a more refined diagnostic test will further reduce mortality in Australia and in Asia, where the figure in some countries is closer to 75 per cent.

So now, when someone mails “white powder” OR “tea” (the color of dirt) they’ll be bioterrorists!

"melioidosis"

hm. what a nice name. has a nice melodic ring to it... or... is melodramatic.

We know swine flu was a flop. Question is, who will profit from this melioidosis?

"New research suggests the bacterium did, in fact, originate in northern Australia and spread to Asia during the last Ice Age, 15,000 to 40,000 years."

Ice age? Ice Age??? hello! we are now in the global warming stage!

My apologies, since this is from Wikipedia:

Melioidosis (also called Whitmore disease or Nightcliff gardener's disease):

...It is phylogenetically related closely to Burkholderia mallei which causes glanders, an infection primarily of horses, donkeys and mules. The name Melioidosis is derived from the Greek melis meaning "a distemper of asses" with the suffixes -oid meaning "similar to" and -osis meaning "a condition" i.e. a condition similar to glanders.

We're so lucky we have President Obama on the job. He's going to KICK SOME ASSES, you know.

Since records began 20 years ago, about 600 people across the Top End have contracted the disease, which causes chest infections, skin ulcers and prostate abscesses, and 85 have died.

We need to invest more research money in finding a cure for this disease right a way!

Just make contact with an illegal in an ER. You get a big taste of 3rd world exotic bugs and tapeworms right there.

The whole idea that it’s just a few bugs we don’t know about is ridiculous. There are thousands of bugs we don’t know about.

I recently took a course on diseases that few people know about. It was interesting to find out that the mystery illness I had as a child was likely one of those diseases...

There have been cases of this disease occurring now, 11 years later, in different states. Reportedly due to contaminated aromatherapy scents.
