When the Empire State Building lights up, reaching 102 stories into the Manhattan sky, people lift their eyes and guess what that night's colors might mean a holiday, a charitable cause, maybe a Yankees win or a birthday.
But sometimes, color turns to controversy.
Tens of thousands of people are in an uproar about the building owner's refusal to light New York City's tallest skyscraper in blue and white to honor Mother Teresa in August on what would be her 100th birthday.

We live in a sick culture. Nothing else to say.

I’m not sure. The article states the owner decides who gets the honor of the lights, and I realzie he’s free to acknowledge whomever he chooses. I just do not understand his logic in this situation. I think it’s a shame.
The Empire State Building is privately owned, and the owner can do whatever the hell he damn well pleases when it comes to illuminating the top of the building to commemorate some event or person. New York City has long been a symbol of radical Marxist secularism anyway, so I think it's perfectly in character for the owner of its tallest building to recognize Mao Tse Tung while ignoring Mother Teresa.
Heck -- I've lived in the New York City region for much of my life, and I don't think I've ever been to the Empire State Building.
Barry must have threatened to kick his ***.
Does a moslem own it?
This is not unlike the controversy surrounding the proposed postage stamp in her honor. It does speak poorly for the decision-makers and reflects badly on the state of our culture, but that is our problem and Mother Theresa wouldn’t have cared about the honors while she was among us in this life and most certainly doesn’t care about them now.
I agree with your statement that the owner can do what he wants. It’s a free country & he’s free to be a total douchebag. But like I said above, I fail to understand his logic. What a bass-ackward way of thinking. Oh well. I posted this as an FYI, not to create a call to boycott or anything.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China under Communist rule and Mao's 1949 revolution, the Chinese will hold a military parade in Beijing on Thursday of unparalleled size -- 5,000 soldiers, 43,000 fireworks and a display of 52 new weapons -- followed by a civilian parade of 100,000 marchers and 60 floats, many chanting new nationalistic mantras coined by the Chinese government for the occasion.
For a nation that worships Mao, and the path of development and prosperity the Chinese people believe he charted, nothing less would do to commemorate its 60th anniversary.
But when it comes to the commemoration of China's 60th anniversary in the U.S., perhaps we could -- and should -- expect a little less.
Wednesday night in New York City, the Empire State Building will illumine its familiar spire with red and yellow lights in honor of Communist China. The Communism-themed color scheme will stay lit through Thursday night, much to the delight of China's consular officials, who were on hand for a ceremony in the lobby of the iconic building Wednesday morning, and to the acute dismay of the dozen or so protesters outside, and to many Americans who question whether honoring China's Communist revolution here is at all appropriate.

Mao Tse-Tung
AKA Chairman Mao, AKA 'The Great Helmsman'. (Tse-Tung can also be spelt Zedong. Translated the name means 'To Shine on the East'.)
Country: China
Kill tally: 14 to 20 million deaths from starvation during the 'Great Leap Forward'. Tens of thousands killed and millions of lives ruined during the 'Cultural Revolution'.
A previous owner of the Empire State Building was Leona Helmsley -- the so-called "Queen of Mean" who served 18 months in prison for tax evasion. So it's not as if this building has a glorious history when it comes to its ownership. LOL.
Thanks for that stuff. Totally barf worthy. Where are these peoples’ heads?
You’re welcome. Hard to believe one of those articles I posted above came from the far left Huffington Post!
I’m not catholic but I say, “Light Up”. Mother Theresa was a great woman.
He lives in New York. Close enough.
