The NOAA has predicted a very active hurricane season this year, and the oil disaster in the Gulf only heightens the concern.
Things are getting off to a bad start. This weekend, Tropical Depression Agatha killed over 100 in Central America.
And look, it's heading through the Gulf of Mexico. Map via MonkeyFister.

UPPER-LEVEL WINDS...PARTICULARLY TO THE NORTH OF THE SYSTEM IN THE GULF OF MEXICO...ARE NOT CONDUCIVE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND THERE IS A LOW CHANCE...10 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo_atl.shtml
To: blam
Currently, NOAA gives the system <30% chance of developing into a tropical system again within 48 hours. That doesn’t provide much comfort with oil slick ~ 120 miles off the Tampa Bay coast.

I bet the models will have to be thrown out the window unless they can get a supercomputer to forecast the areas of oil on the surface and its affects of warming that area of water by absorbing more sunlight.
Could increase a storms intensity or alter its course. Or it may feed it too fast and it will choke itself.

Friday evening (in the Galleria area), we got a storm so intense that it included hail. Tree limbs the size of my forearm all over the place.

Yes I was in that storm. We live just north of the Galleria and that storm dropped exactly 1/10 of an inch of rain at my house. I have a rain gage and I check it. It had a small tornado that tore things up when it got down to Bissonnet.
