d, does that photo evoke memories. It was at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception that Tony's funeral mass was held. Ironic in a way that it was also there that Tony gave a commencement speech not too many months before his passing.

Having made the sad journey to the funeral, I was struck by the size and beauty of the basilica. But, it seemed fitting for the breath of Tony's influence and the beauty within his soul. As I looked around it seemed like the entire political and media elite of DC were in that place. But, there is no church large enough to hold all of the friends that Tony made.

And, just as some good comes from any bad, it was there that I first got to meet Surfer-Boy in person. [Tony's producer.] He is doing his best to keep the legacy of Tony Snow alive.

Hi, G-Chick. A “Class Act” indeed. Why are there so few in today's world?

Tony was my favorite guest host for Rush. May you rest in peace Tony, we’ll remember you always.

Hey, d. I thought everyone would be asleep by this time. I don't know how saveliberty does it. My fingers hurt from the posts I made this evening. [I know, what a whimp!]

Again, thanks for the many photos you posted, they bring back so many memories. And I feel much like you over the loss. It is strange to feel a greater sadness at the loss of a friend than at the loss of a family member.

When I retired from flying, I was at a loss then, too. I had flown my entire life and then abruptly at 60, it is mandatory retirement. When Tony and Surfer-Boy gave me a chance to have a peripheral role [very peripheral] in the radio show [I e-mailed in some stuff] my life became upbeat once again. When Tony went to work for Pres. Bush, I started to slip back into a funk. It lasted only until we got the first call from the White House! It was Tony.

And when things starting going badly for Tony, Surfer-boy came to the rescue and once again provided support. So many good people came into my life because of Tony.

I am rambling which means I am tired. Thanx for asking about Tarhill, she has improved a bit, but we are taking her to the doctor's tomorrow just to be safe.

Good nite.

I know I am late to the party, but I also wanted to say Hiya Tony.... happy b-day, and we miss you. I only lurked on the morning threads, but loved the comraderie that surrounded Tony’s show.

One of my favorite Tony quotes, as kept on my home page....

“Read the whole thing, as they say. Of course atheists feel pangs of emotion. They grieve, they laugh, they cry, they show up to hug and console. But when it comes to having something substantive to say, something that would provide consolation — that life has meaning; that one doesn’t simply occupy space for a time and then decompose; that there are great overarching principles that give life its depth, joy, texture and purpose; and that those principles arise not from artifice or practice, but from a Creator whose central principle is love — when it comes to making these arguments and more, the atheist must remain mute. They still can and do hug and cry. But they cannot argue that life is anything other than an accident and death, the end of everything...”

I remember we were all so thrilled that you were able to attend the funeral (right after the death of your aunt, I believe). Even if none of the family had known you were there, all the Snowflakes knew and were comforted by the fact that you represented us.

I certainly remember you meeting Grif and that he gave you a ride to the airport. Tony would have been proud. :)

Do you ever hear from Grif? I would love to know how Jill and the children are doing. They probably prefer to be out of the limelight---and we will have to be content with just keeping them in our prayers.

"I come not to bury journalism, but to celebrate and challenge it. It's a cliche that every crisis presents an opportunity, but it's true: The democratization of the media is a good thing. We now face competition from all quarters - including from people who have specialized expertise that journalists lack. We ought to welcome the new participants in the game and learn from them. They should do the same with us. There’s an old boast in the business - that the job of a journalist is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. The thing is, we never realized that we were becoming The Comfortable - with good pay, job security, and access to movers and shakers all around the world. We need to cast off our coziness, venture away from safe stories and presumptions and into the wilderness of new topics, new ideas and new sources of information. In that quest lies the possibility of fulfillment and joy - and the hope of keeping alive the text and the spirit of the First Amendment."

saveliberty, I went thru the entire Thread tonight and posted to a few familiar “faces”. Still don't know how you can be such a gracious hostess and acknowledge just about everyone. You are a SnowFlake of the first order!

5 minutes of birthday left here on the east coast and then we can start thinking about next year's reunion, if you still have the energy.

Tarheel is on the mend but taking her to the doc's tomorrow to make sure.

Thank you for hosting Tony's birthday Thread.

(((hugs)))

My golly, d, you remember what I did better than I do. I may need to consult you in a couple of years as my memory seems to be getting a tad fuzzy.

Grif touches base now and then. Cannot comment here because of the complex etiquette of his business. He did say in a note to saveliberty that he had a chance to view the Thread and would share it with Jill and the kids. As far as I know they are doing fine, but I am pretty much out of the loop.

The clock is striking midnight so I have to head off to bed. Good to chat with you again, my friend.

Sleep well.

And finally, “Happy Birthday”, Tony.

We sent Bahbah ahead to guide the way. No doubt a few more of us will join you by next year's birthday.

Surfer-Boy is doing his best to keep the flame alive.

We love ya and miss ya.
