CLAYTON, Mo. - Panera Bread Co. is asking customers at a new restaurant to pay what they want.
The national bakery and restaurant chain launched a new nonprofit store here this week that has the same menu as its other 1,400 locations. But the prices are a little different there aren't any. Customers are told to donate what they want for a meal, whether it's the full suggested price, a penny or $100.

Family knows I like the soup and bread there.
Think I better use my gift cards before this one store destroys the entire chain? LOL
Freeloading hippies to follow...
Paying $5.00 for a PBJ is way too much.
I’ll pay $1.00.
I hope they don’t try that in my neighborhood.
Low income housing folks will come everyday to eat for free. They don’t go in there now though, LOL!
There’s a great burger place in Dearborn, Michigan (Miller’s Bar) that sort of works on the honor system. You sit down at your table, a waitress comes by and takes your order. You don’t get any bill, they just depend on you to walk up to the register on the way out and tell them what you ordered and pay for it. I suppose they’d come after someone if they attempted to walk out without paying, but there is no real enforcement (and there are exits which don’t require you to pass the register). The place does really well as I assume everybody pretty much pays up. Rated the #8 burgers in America by GQ Magazine.
Must have listened to the Dear Reader. And now they realize that they have obviously made enough money.
LOL! Panera Bread? They s*ck. I order a $6 sandwich and get one small slice of turkey and a tiny tiny pieces of cheese.
I think you got something there! I'd only add, that we should be able to dictate where we want our "contributions" to go.
Me, I'd have mine go to defense only!
Big tax write-off + much favorable publicity = WIN!
Switch to Subway—a 12” for $5 full of meat, cheese, and optionals.
If they are this stupid...I will short the stock.
PRNA....
I’ve seen at least one news report about a restaurant or coffee shop with a similar “pay what you want” policy, and supposedly it worked out OK. However, I believe that was an independently owned place in a small town.
However, I can’t see this being anything but a disaster with a national chain. Remember the mobs crowding KFC demanding their free chicken from Oprah?
I remember going to one like that in Vienna VA. I wonder if it is still successful? Seems the cost was high, maybe that covered the cheaters too.
and the Berkeley Free Store just keeps resurfacing again, and again, and again...
Maybe they are trying to figure what the public thinks about the value of individual items?
I'd guess Panera will get less than that.....
Dumb asses..........
I don’t know anything about this company or about this town, but I just wonder if they are up to something. Based on what you said about this area, is it possible that they are trying to bring down the businesses that you mention? Or perhaps the property values? Follow the money, as they say.
I often wonder if the people in city government who encourage bums to sleep in certain parts of San Francisco are looking for a way to drive down the price of real estate so they can buy low on good locations.
FULL MEAL, 40 cents.

Steak dinner, $3.50

Naive is my take on the right word. I’ve been to Paneras here in central NC. They are one and all truly nice people, but utterly unreal and unexperienced in any kind of adversity. Just nice folks of no substance whatsoever. They might well get some support from customers, out of pity if no higher response.
It’s still not going to work.
