Eight-term Rep. Mark Souder will announce his resignation Tuesday after it came to light that he was conducting an affair with a female staffer who worked in his district office, Fox News has learned.

Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of the affair would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee.

Elected as a family values conservative as part of the Republican revolution in 1994, Souder survived a tough re-election challenge in 2008 and survived a contested primary two weeks ago.

Wonder what the percentages are of politicians who can’t keep their pants on compared to common voters.

“...the extent of the affair would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee.”

Extent? What does that mean? Makes it sound like you can do it with the staff as long as you don’t do it for too long.

Or is it a veiled reference to financial impropriety?

It will likely be Bob Thomas who ran a close race against Souder. This maybe good in the long run. Souder was becoming and elist RINO.

Party leaders will most likely appoint a successor to run

Hopefully, they don't chose another Scozzafava. These party leader never fail to disappoint.

I always wonder if some sort of blackmail is involved in these cases—the politician gets in trouble, someone’s holding it over his head, and rather than wait for them to lower the boom, steps out and resigns to pick the lesser of two evils...

Given the same opportunities, probably about the same.

Bob Thomas was a good second in the primary, if he is picked, is he a candidate with conservative values?

>> was she worth it? <<

Doesn’t FR have “rules” to cover such questions?

“So he won the primary only to resign? That is low.”

Obviously, this affair was going on well before the campaign. He should have announced his “retirement” earlier this year. But he did not.....another reason why I am kinda glad he is gone.

Fellow FReepers.....Souders seat is in a very conservative part of the state and will remain in GOP hands.

Is sex so important for these men that they jeopardize everything for it?

Not happy in your marriage, get a divorce. It is legal and certainly better in the long run then having an affair with a staffer. Especially if you are a Republican. The media will not provide you any coverage.

Once divorced find a girlfriend (someone not on your staff). Then have your fun.

Another argument for term limits, DC is so corrupting!! But, if we are going to track down affairs with interns, let’s start at the top. What’s going on in the White House?

Gee, having an affair with a staffer made Bill Clinton an International Victim Cause Celebre, and launced Newt Gingrich into the intellectual leadership of the Republican Party. What are they dumping on this guy for? /sarc

(oh...I get it....it’s only guys in $60K middle management jobs who boink their employees who get hung out to dry anymore)

Thanks for the figures.
Apparently, the party leaders will select the GOP candidate for November. Hopefully, they will select Bob Thomas, who is the logical choice.

All you so-called conservative republicans that have skeletons in your closet which will embarrass the conservative movement

Sorry, but just about everyone has some type of 'skeleton in their closet'.

I'd just be happy if they could keep ~it~ in their pants.

Anyone who volunteered to help this idiot get elected should personally be knocking on his door demanding he pay them for wasting their time, IMHO.
