Deepwater Horizon Well Failed Key Test ( Some hours before the blowout & explosion )

WASHINGTON—House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman said Wednesday that BP PLC officials told House investigators that the Deepwater Horizon well did not pass a key pressure test the morning of the April 20 explosion.

Mr. Waxman, a California Democrat, said that James Dupree, BP's senior vice president for the Gulf of Mexico, told House investigators that the test was "not satisfactory" and "inconclusive."

The tests indicated uneven buildups of pressure in different lengths of the pipe. The results, Mr. Dupree told investigators, signaled a potential influx of gas into the wellbore. It is now thought that a sudden surge of gas into the wellbore caused the well to blow.

Rep. Bart Stupak (D., Mich.) separately is expected to say that a preliminary House investigation has uncovered "four significant problems" with the blowout preventer. The preventer, he said, "apparently had a significant leak in a key hydraulic system," according to prepared remarks to be delivered this morning at an Energy and Commerce hearing on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The committee's investigation has found that Transocean Ltd. had made "extensive" modifications to the blowout preventer before the explosion. A key shear ram, which is meant to cut through and seal off the main pipe in the event of a blowout, was also found to be "not powerful enough to cut through joints in the drill pipe."

The investigation also found that "the emergency controls on the blowout preventer may have failed." One finding was that a battery meant to activate a "deadman switch" when all other steps had failed was itself dead at the time of the disaster.

At the hearing, Mr. Waxman outlined a series of events leading up to the explosion.

What did Palin say? We should only let US companies drill of the US shores?

Test like you use.

I am not putting much in anything Waxman releases but if these are BP’s words, they have some serious issues with their Testing approach. If they DID have proper test procedures and failed to follow them or ignored results and proceeded anyway, then they are in deeper water than Deepwater.

I pray that this second attempt is able to keep this disaster from getting worse. Good luck and Godspeed to those invoved in this effort.

I’d like to hear it from Dupree. I have little trust in the accuracy of Waxman’s version of anything anybody said.

When did she say that? I have my doubts as her husband worked for BP.

I love hearing congressional morons reading prepared statements about something they know absolutely nothing about. They might as well have J. R. Ewing up there with Sue Ellen. I suppose it is the same when doctors watch medical shows on TV, lawyers hear asbestos commercials on the radio...

Sounds like it,...but they didn’t have it all out ...see the link at #4 and the report from a supply ship.

Facts Nostrilboy will NOT talk about:
#1:Hussein received more $$ from BP than any candidate!

#2: Hussein's administration gave BP a pass on environmental studies because his regulators said an oil spill was not likely.

Coincidence?

What a disaster. It looks like there was a simultaneous failure of both the well construction and the blow-out preventer. How can huge, well-capitalized companies like BP, Haliburton, and Transocean allow such a disaster to happen? I’ve seen a lot of screwed up information tech projects in the corporate world but I thought deepwater drillers couldn’t screw up this badly.

Without a doubt, this wasn’t caused by any single failure. It was certainly multiple failures, procedures and/or mechanical.
