Deval Patrick implores gun law passage
Boston Herald ^ | May 11, 2010 | Hillary Chabot

Posted on 05/11/2010 3:56:14 AM PDT by Second Amendment First

Gov. Deval Patrick said the senseless shooting death of a teenage Boston honors student this weekend should prompt lawmakers to act on a stalled measure detailed in the Herald that would target machine gun ownership.

“The tragedy over the weekend in Boston with another 14-year-old who was killed just underscores the importance of getting action,” Patrick said yesterday.

The governor said he spoke with the slain teen’s mother yesterday morning and told her, “It’s not the order of things that you bury your own child. That a child who is doing right and is playing on the streets would be the victim of a random gunshot is not acceptable.”

Jaewon Martin, 14, was gunned down Saturday as he and a friend were playing at a basketball court at the Bromley-Heath housing project.

House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo (D-Winthrop) is considering the legislation in light of Martin’s tragic death, said spokesman Seth Gitell.

The Herald reported yesterday that licensing of the dangerous automatic weapons has skyrocketed - even though an 8-year-old boy was killed using one at a gun show more than two years ago.

Some lawmakers have bristled at Patrick’s legislation, which they say goes too far and would strip law abiding gun owners of their rights.

The bill, which is in the judiciary committee on Beacon Hill, would limit gun sales to one firearm a month and ban anyone who isn’t the licensed owner or a police officer from having a machine gun.

Patrick also blamed gun lobbyists for the delay yesterday. “Look, there’s a lot of volume that the gun lobby has in this building,” Patrick said, adding that lawmakers ought to listen to the victims of crimes instead.

Who wait a sec. I thought Massachusetts had some of the strictest anti-USA laws in the nation regarding guns. How could a shooting POSSIBLY have happened?

Me too, and I live in MA. Also, careless reading of the article might lead one to believe the poor kid was shot with a legal weapon.

Maybe I’m missing something but I didn’t read in the article where the boy was gunned down by a licensed owner with an automatic weapon.

The boy was killed on a basketball court. I’m sure the perp was a legal gun owner following all the safety rules. </sarc>

Clearly it must have been an AK-47, just like every other gun.

Amazing how low the anti-gunners will go. They’ll walk over the dead bodies of children to further their leftist agenda.

If they are talking about a full auto machine gun ban, well how many of those are in Mass to begin with? When you factor in the $200 FFL-3 license and the cost of the gun (since none have been made for the civilian market since 1986) you’re going to be paying 15 - 16 grand.

Me-thinks they are talking about banning semi-autos....

This is why so many citizens hate politicians. I have read several news articles on this shooting and not a single one states that the weapon used was a machine gun. If it was not then what does this young mans death have to do with passing a machine gun law? The politician is just using the young mans death for political expediency. Besdies aren’t there more then enough FEDERAL LAWS covering the sale ownership and use of machine guns?

Yes, the Federal law makes machine guns practically extinct in the civilian market.

They never miss an opportunity to exploit a tragedy, to pass more ineffective, worthless laws, do they?

The little boy who killed himself with the UZI should never have been handed such a weapon. I’ve read that this was against the law there, so what difference would another law make?

Besides which, it was an epic fail on the part of his Father, the rangemaster, and so forth.

As far as the shooting cited in the lead goes, I hadn’t heard of that, but I also suspect yet another law would have made no difference, either.

Vote ‘em all out, and let’s start with a fresh batch of idiots...

Some of what you say is indeed correct, however the $200 dollars is for a tax stamp not a class 3. You don’t need a license for a machine gun. Full auto can be had for under $4000 dollars. Gun ownership isn't the problem. The culture that glorifies violence and protects the violent thugs is the problem.
