Burr was running radio ads in Charlotte.
My letter to Richard Burr:
Dear Senator Burr:
Allow me to introduce myself. I am a lifelong Republican voter, having cast my very first vote for Gerald Ford in 1976. I “came of age” politically in grad school and proudly supported Ronald Reagan in 1980. I have worked polls, made telephone calls, passed out pamphlets, contributed money, money and more money, worked more polls, laughed and wept with winners and losers on election nights, visited DC to see “my” guys and engaged in a gazillion political debates with all types. I am one of your constitutents who has never written you. I am one of your core voters. I am middle class, a small business owner, holder of a graduate degree, church going, and married to the same woman for over 30 years. I could not be more “red” in the red v blue cultural divisions.
I voted for you earlier, as I voted for George Bush and Elizabeth Dole. I did so because I believed your statements about you being for fiscal restraint, individual liberty, and rights of states and individuals over that of the federal gov’t. I voted for all three of you because I believed the party line about it being important to support people BECAUSE OF THE PARTY, lest we get the kind of loons we now have running things. So I swallowed hard when you voted for idiotic pork projects like the 4 million porkpot, er, teapot museum, but supported you and others of like mind...., because of the alternative.
Let me be frank. You are about to lose my vote. Your support, indeed your SPONSORSHIP of the absolutely horrendous S. 510, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act removes any pretense you can claim to be a “conservative” even in this election year, when that tag is so politically desirable to you. This bill may be prompted by a desire to PROTECT us, but in fact, it strips us of our freedoms in food production, and places us under a hodgepodge of external international agreements, entities, and regulations regarding the raising and importation of foods. Moreover, it severely curtails the rights of small farmers, animal husbandry entrepreneurs, and small food brokers to engage in FREE TRADE. This bill moves yet another area, that of basic sustenance, under the purview of the federal government. Finally, this is one of the most blatant examples of lobbyist written law in recent history. Monsanto may as well have your senate seat as far as this bill is concerned. We are for FREEDOM of small food producers, not a federal tilting of the table so that more and more of this industry slops into the glutted maw of the genetic engineers of the food industry. This is intolerable, NOT “conservative” in any known universe, and I for one am not going to continue to support this kind of operation because someone waves a picture of Pelosi and Reid at me.
I don’t know, to be frank, how you would be able to distance yourself from such a bill....,as you SPONSORED it. However, it is such a monstrous abortion and trampling of our liberties that unless I hear that you have reconsidered your ill advised support for this, I can promise you I am going to do something I have never done. I am going to Elaine Marshall and I am GOING TO CAMPAIGN FOR HER. If I have to pick socialism or socialism lite, I am going for the real thing.
I am being blunt, and a bit incendiary (but the threat is real) in my language here because you need to realize that I AM YOUR BASE. I AM A POSTER CHILD OF YOUR BASE. We as a whole are fed completely up, and we are not going to march lockstep to the polls listening to Rush and Sean tell us how awful the democrats are when we just have statism with an “R” in front of it as the alternative.
Respectfully.
xxxxxxxx
PS. I am not a farmer, nor engaged in any shape manner or form in the agricultural industry.
Burr’s sponsorship of the bill in posting #22 is awful. Since it’s too late to cast a protest vote against him in the primary, maybe protesters at his events will make the point.
