Too bad we don't do a better job teaching American history in schools.

Mom, there are certain things (can't recall what they are) that are forgotten.

Thanks for raising me to be an American.

Amen!

I hereby move that we abolish the Communists' favorite holiday, Labor Day, and replace it with Patriot's Day.

How about we replace “Martin Luther King JR’s” “holiday” with this.

Koch said if Patriot’s Day was a national holiday, more Americans would understand the nation’s "revolutionary spirit" and how much the Founder Fathers risked their lives.

Actually it would just become another paid holiday for government hacks and a regular work day for hte private sector like it is around the Greater Boston area..

Anybody who sponsors “Sex for Sam” (the Amos and Opie radio contest for public sex acts, one of which took place in St. Patrick’s cathedral) has already carved out his public niche and should keep his mouth shut regarding patriotic holidays.

Let's see...Patriots Day Sales....politicians speaking at union picnics...local news stations doing stories on "real" patriots (illegal immigrants, "single moms", etc)....

Nice idea, but quickly perverted by corporate greed, politicians and the media.

A patriot in the middle of Boston Beer. Who’da thunk.

I’ve been thinking lately we need a patriotic “tea party” holiday at tax time to remind people of the founding principles. It could replace what the original Independence Day was supposed to be and has lost over the years, a day that the Declaration was read to the assembled people.

Any thoughts? Should we continue to have tea parties on tax day, or do it to the 19th, or what?

The thing is to keep it from being emasculated by the powers in Washington, where they have destroyed Washington’s birthday, Decoration Day etc by making them days to have parties and go on vacation. And the people who celebrate have no idea who we even fought for our freedom.

I don’t have a problem with it being a national holiday so long as it doesn’t give our already overpaid government employees another excuse for having one more paid holiday.

Actually, I amend that. If we could have Congress not be in session during that day, it would be a good thing. Just give Congress the day off. One less day for them to work on oppressing our freedoms and liberties.

Patriot’s Day is a holiday in Boston. They run the marathon that day.

As to American history in schools, Bill Bennett has written two books on the subject that were designed to be used as textbooks.

He had on Janine Turner (from Northern Exposure and Friday Night Lights) today to discuss her organization which is working on a curriculum on the Constitution and Federalist Papers. It’s being designed with a grade school through high school approach.

"Constituting America’s mission is to reach, educate and inform America's youth and her citizens about the importance of the U.S. Constitution and the foundation it sets forth regarding our freedoms and rights."

I watched HBO’s John Adams last year, and the portrayal of Sam Adams in that series was fascinating. I had always seen Sam Adams portrayed as a jolly, chubby, beer-drinking, good ‘ol boy-type ... pretty much like on the Sam Adams beer bottles. On the mini-series he was pretty hardcore ... much more the angry revolutionary than the jolly good ‘ol boy.
