Allee Bautsch, chief campaign fundraiser for Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, and her boyfriend Joe Brown, were savagely beaten Friday night in New Orleans after leaving a Republican party fundraising dinner by a group of thugs who reportedly targeted the couple because they were wearing Sarah Palin pins.
Bautch's leg was broken and Brown incurred a broken jaw and nose as well as a concussion.
The Hayride reports that a source who visited Bautsch at the hospital the day after the attack says they were told the couple was attacked for wearing Palin buttons:
Two people at the Brennan’s event have now confirmed that the protest had largely broken up by the time it ended, but we also understand from someone who visited Allee Bautsch in the hospital Saturday morning that she and Brown were followed and attacked expressly because they had Palin pins on (she heard one of the attackers say “Let’s get them, they have Palin pins on” – so the attack WAS politically motivated as its victims understood it. It was not a mugging, it was not an argument gone wrong and it was not a bar fight.
The story of a Republican and her boyfriend being viciously attacked for wearing Palin buttons has yet to make national headlines, unlike say, unfounded rumors of nasty words being said by Tea Party protesters.
The story we here in the outside world heard after the levee problems is that money was allocated to Louisiana for years to do maintenance on the levees, and the money got spent on everything but maintenance on the levees.
If there’s anyone to be imprisoned for manslaughter, it’s the Louisiana and New Orleans government officials who used levee-maintenance money for political patronage.
You were horribly misinformed. The US Army Corps of Engineers designs, builds, & contracts all the levees & canal walls. The canal walls that fell apart in 2005 had all been “rebuilt” and “upgraded” by the Corps and its contractors after the year 2000. The Orleans Levee Board was basically in charge of mowing the grass on those levees and flood walls.
The only levees the local levee board ever built were the “lake fill” “super-levees” on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, none of which spontaneously disintegrated during the Federal Flood.

I believe that New Orleans and Corpus Christi both ought to move to less hazadous locations.
This is just a personal belief. I’ve noticed that in past historical times when a city was devastated, usually by natural disasters like floods, earthquake, or whatever, the inhabitants would move the city to another location.
It has historical precedence. Coastal areas are prone to having shorelines move - oceans actively erode and deposit material haphazardly. Ultimately it is up to those cities to make the decision whether to move or not and if the government, meaning U.S. taxpayers, decided it was ridiculous to keep rebuilding in such locations, perhaps the cities will move.
When was Corpus Christi devastated because it is a coastal city?
Up until Hurricane Katrina, Corpus Christi was reputed to have been the worst hurricane disaster in U.S. history. It happened in 1874, on Sept. 5th, with 115 mph winds and a storm surge sending mountainous waves over the city which at the time did not have sea walls.

Corpus is no more likely to be seriously damaged by a hurricane than any other coastal city in Gulf.
To lump it in with or to compare it to New Orleans is ridiculous.
As I said, it is my opinion.
The American people get fed up with paying for other folks stupid decisions.
One of those is choosing to live in an area prone to natural disasters and expecting the taxpayer to bail them out afterwards.
Like the "stupid" decision to live in the north, south, east and western America? Ya gotta live somewhere and there are disasters of some sort everywere.

I am pointing out that Corpus Christi and New Orleans have NOTHING in common. To compare any city to New Orleans in conjunction with Katrina is to trash that city.
That is one of the things we do here, point out fallacies and this is a big one.
Further, the Governemnt has not “bailed out” Corpus Christi, much less over and over!

New Orleans is a treasure worth saving....very important city to me.

Comparing Corpus Christi to New Orleans because of hurricanes is stupid. One is below sea level depending on levees to stay dry and the other is not.
This is like comparing an aircraft carrier to a bass boat for landing planes. Simply an exercise in stupidity.

My statement concerned the repeated expenditure of Federal money for cities located in areas that frequently experience devastating hurricanes which can result in extensive rebuilding or even obliteration of a city due to flooding.
I’m sure there are nearby locations, suitable for a city, that are safer than where Corpus Christi and New Orleans are presently located.
Using your criteria every city within a hundred miles of the coast will have to be moved ............. somewhere.

No, dear boy, YOU are misinformed. The Corps of Engineers had told NO for decades that repairs and upgrades were needed, and when they tried to do so, the locals basically prevented the necessary construction...."too noisy"...."takes up too much land area".....and on and on.
I'm from Louisiana, and grew up surrounded by Corps of Engineers flood control projects (Old River Control Structure, Morganza Floodway, the Mississippi River and Atchafalya levee systems, and much else), so I know precisely what they do. Add to that that one of the head engineers was a family friend. Add to all that that I have family in New Orleans, and thus have "eyewitness" testimony to what went on.
New Orleans screwed itself. Period.
