SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday on a resolution urging restaurants, grocery stores and schools to observe no meat on Mondays.
Supervisor Sophie Maxwell has been a vegetarian for 35 years and would like to see more people move toward a vegetarian diet.
With that in mind, she introduced a resolution to declare Mondays in San Francisco as "Vegetarian Day."
"I think San Francisco is a food town. There are a lot of vegetarian restaurants and a lot of things that people can think about," said Maxwell. "Not only bring attention to, but think about the alternatives to meat."
Dixie Mahy, the president of the San Francisco Vegetarian Society said she thinks it's a great idea.
"All the statistics are on our side. And we can show you that a lot of the degenerative diseases are associated with a high fat, high meat, high dairy diet," said Mahy.
At Maxwell's urging, the supervisors also took up a resolution that commends local businesses that use cage-free eggs.

A Munchy FRee Tuesday on NO Marijuana Day at the next board meeting?
Its none of their business what people eat.
Is that code for no gay sex on Mondays?
It’s none of her business what anyone else chooses to eat.
The schools are more likely to give pot to kids than have a no pot day.
Kids are already being "prescribed" pot for whatever reason, toe jam or whatever.
How wonderful to live in an area with so few serious problems that time and attention can be focused on the trivial.
Welcome to the Nanny State!
FRom cradle to grave, they birth ya, feed ya, indoctrinate ya, milk ya and toss ya aside in yur old age..
California is increasingly crazy.
hey sophie... I am going to have the biggest juiciest poterhouse steak I can find next monday in your honor!!
Once in a blue moon I’ll go through a day and realize that I didn’t eat any meat that day - it’s always that “ain’t that a bitch” kinda feeling, part proud of something, part regretful.
What does Ms. Maxwell have against vegetables? They have feelings too!
Over the last few days, as I’ve read stuff here and there, one thought keeps coming to mind...
I can’t breathe. I am serious, I read stuff and find myself gasping for air.
This is oppression. Oppression of the worst, insidious, evil kind.
If it's not fatty meat, preferably seal, it's simply not edible.
If being a vegetarian were a dietary choice people actually wanted to make, Mondays would already be meat-free. I hope some enterprising restaurant declares a “free meat” monday counter campaign, maybe offering a free side of bacon with every entree.
I would like to institute a “No Liberal Tuesday” here in Massachusetts. Every Tuesday, all liberals have to stay home and in the workplace, we can be more productive and we won’t even miss the liberals not being there. Then after work, we can have a few beers and tell some politically incorrect jokes. I think one day a week to have a normal day with normal people is not all that much to ask for.
“vegetarian day”could compliment “All fruits day in san fran”
No vegetable Tuesdays
No dessert Wednesdays
Nothing but dessert Thursdays
/nanny state "conservative"
(for those in Rio Linda, that was sarcasm)
Let the liberal whining begin. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
