Tens of thousands call for immigration reform at Washington rally

Protesters carrying banners and U.S. flags mass on the National Mall. Organizers are trying to cast the issue as an element of economic recovery.

Reporting from Washington

Tens of thousands of people began assembling in Washington on Sunday to march for immigration reform, a politically charged issue that has been pushed to a back burner by the intense focus on healthcare.

Wearing colorful shirts and carrying banners and U.S. flags, thousands filled two blocks on the National Mall, chanting "si se puede" - "yes we can" - and "Obama listen, remember your promise."

Among the marchers was Jose Barnell, 60, a janitor originally from Mexico who said he crossed the border in 1970. A longtime resident of Chicago, he said he is now legal, as are his children and grandchildren. He traveled to Washington by bus to support immigration reform.

"We play a bugle right before we enter a fight," he said.

But many lawmakers, analysts and even activists are dubious that any overhaul of the immigration system is imminent. Sunday's march has been overshadowed by the House vote on healthcare overhaul legislation, and other domestic issues, such as the economy, weigh more heavily in the political calculus of this midterm election year.

Assuming health care passes today, there is nothing stopping them. They will go for broke. Expect immigration reform, union check-off and cap and trade to be pushed through before the November election.

Then let the new Revolution begin!

I grew up in a city with a predominantly Hispanic population. The place was an absolute rat hole when I left and it has actually managed to get worse. Yet the democrats never get voted out. You can shoot people in the streets there if you are a democrat and still get reelected.

All of the Spanish immigrants that were worth anything and were hard working left. What is left there are exactly what they want to give amnesty to. A bunch of low life jack asses who don't think that they should work for anything and think that the government is there to take care of them. They essentially bring their third world country over with them.

Stay in your third world country if that is what you intend to do!

Cap and tax will have to pass through the Senate first. This will be taken up, along with reconciliation of the House health care bill, after Easter Break. Then comes Immigration through the House. Gun Control will also reappear, and so will financial “reform” and disarmament of our military.

That’s what the last amnesty got us. It was offered to 1 million...3 million got it and many didn’t even bother, just hung out in our country for decades. If we amnesty 20 million, we’ll get 60 million, by historical accounting.
The floodgates of newcomers will overwhelm us...there will be no further enforcement...bet on it...’not humane’ don’t ya know!
They will bring in all their relatives and the USA will be just another 3rd world latino country.
