Former Republican House leader Dick Armey said staunch anti-immigration opponents such as Rep. Tom Tancredo are destructive to Republicans and are alienating a natural constituency that could help the party win elections.
Who in the Republican Party was the genius that said that now that we have identified the fastest-growing voting demographic in America, lets go out and alienate them? Armey said, referencing Hispanics, during a luncheon in Washington at the National Press Club.
When I was the majority leader, I saw to it that Tom Tancredo did not get on the stage because I saw how destructive he was, Armey said of the Colorado congressman and 2008 Republican presidential candidate known for his opposition to illegal immigration.
Armey said this is a nation of immigrants and if you love America, love freedom and if you will work and pay taxes, you should be welcome in the country.
The former majority leader, who is now chairman of FreedomWorks and heavily involved in the Tea Party movement, said the INS is deformed and dysfunctional.
They way they treat these folks is unbelievably rude and callous and cruel. Fix that agency, make it do its job, make it do its job in a humane
fashion and then you can control the borders, he said.

LOL! They do live here.
Pelham, you may be right! i just haven’t heard anyone in Congress propose that the migrant farm workers program be abolished.
there are not enough teenagers in Adirondack area of NY to pick the apples. Not enough people, period. Nobody lives up there. (NY23, remember?) Lotsa orchards have resigned themselves to going out of business. sure not the first time that has happened. Not sure I know any politician who wants to take that stand. Not the RINO’s. Not Doug Hoffman (C) - NY23.
Lotsa migrants go home for the winter. Illegal ones and legal ones. You are correct that many of them use the program to become permanent illegals.
Dick Armey also tried to appoint himself head of the Tea Parties.
It’s like this: we want our country back. We don’t care about the “GOP Prospects”. The GOP is, at best, a tool to keep America strong. It’s America that counts. A strong America can not exist if we are being continuously invaded by thosands of hostile aliens, most of whom are illiterate and unskilled.
Anyone who doesn’t get that, who doesn’t see it at the very top of the list of American problems, has no capacity to fix anything.
Tancredo deserves all real patriots respect for dedicating himself to this issue. Among all the candidates in 2008 only Tancredo and Hunter seemed to really “get” the immigration issue.
As far as I’m concerned Dick Armey represents just another politician who serves his masters and not the USA. They have only their own interests. He and his supporters want illegal and more immigration for the purpose of cheap labor and they want the taxpayers to pay the associated costs such as welfare and education. They win we lose, just like Wall St did with their big bets. To get rid of these types is what the Tea Party wants, but instead Armey has connived to become a spokesperson.
And this drunk sounding turd is a Tea party leader? Tancredo is no hero, but on this issue he is solid.
Just another reason why Armey has no leadership role in the Tea Party.
Time to call otut the illegal pnderers, I start with Armey, McCain, Linseed......others?
You’d be much, much better off importing teenagers and paying them vastly more than you pay the illegals. At least you won’t witness your country vanish around you. I remember when SoCal was still part of the United States. It wasn’t that long ago. Now we are part of the Third World, with gangs, graffiti, overcrowding, crime, and English being an endangered species.
yep. Anyway, I hope Tancedo plays a constructive role in electing ONE (or more) new House members have a tough stand on illegal immigration.
