Former Texas GOP chairman Tom Pauken blasts Bush, Rove in new book
Dallas News ^ | March 8, 2010 | Wayne Slater

AUSTIN – As Karl Rove makes the rounds this week with his memoir burnishing the Bush legacy, another book by another Texas Republican offers a decidedly different view.

Former state GOP chairman Tom Pauken, a Dallas lawyer and foot soldier in the Reagan revolution, offers a sober counterpoint to Rove's full-throated defense of his former boss.

In Pauken's view, the former president and "Bush's Brain" not only hijacked conservatism, they nearly destroyed it.

Bush was a disaster for the Republican Party.

The republican party was a disaster for the republican party. Bush was just lousy frosting on a bad cake.

I thank god very day that Bush was president on 9/11...

I will openly question anyone who thinks otherwise.

They are as much of the problem as the other party,

Who are "they?"

You believe all Repubs think alike? What a joke!

I agree with everything except one: I DO "give a crap" what happens to the GOP. We, with the acquiescence, even cheerleading, of "conservative" media and many on FR, saw the Republican dismantling of the revolution in 1994. Those who have worked and donated for 30 or 40 years have been betrayed. We know Democrats do that; we didn't think Republicans would, but we should have known from Bush, Sr. what would happen.

No, I "give a crap" because even after the betrayal and earned electoral catastrophe, we have Steele as RNC chairman, leading candidates Romney and Huckleberry, and McCain as a major spokesman.

They don't learn--or refuse to give up power--so the only first step in any type of recovery for freedom, for the USA, for our society is the total destruction of the Republican Party.

I have never voted (since 1968), and will never vote, for a Democrat. But I WILL either skip a race (if there are none but Ds and Rs) or vote only for those third-party candidates whose same goal is that destruction.

No, but we mostly have voted alike, and look what we get: 2 Bushes, Steele, McCain. Total disaster.

the former president and "Bush's Brain" not only hijacked conservatism, they nearly destroyed it.

The Bush supporting Republican party groupies on Free Republic were never conservative to begin with.

The Bush administration stood around in a circle, gang beating America into the street. When they were done, they passed off power to a street level Communist from Chicago.

Right, I think "you" all think alike. Damn son, get a grip. The entire discussion was based upon politicians in conjunction with their political party. And to be honest I can't think of more than a handful or two of Republicans that I would give all I could to support these days, of those currently sitting in "National" office.

And in case you haven't noticed ... I am not a member of the Republican Party. In fact I endorse no political "party", but had you looked a bit at my home page you might have figured that out and not tried to pick a bone with me.

God Bless America!

"Those who have worked and donated for 30 or 40 years have been betrayed."

Not that I need to but you are exchanging with one such person. I both worked and donated many times for and to candidates of the GOP. Of course that is when I was one of the quenticential Republican Uberalles followers.

Those days have been over for 12 years now as I vote as a non-aligned citizen (sorta like George Washington extolled us all to do) and donate to candidates of my choice directly.

Again, I really without rancor, could care less about the Republican Party!

And the owner of this domain has made it clear that this is not an organ for the GOP - to the contrary, I am guessing he and I would agree on more than you and I, perhaps.

I don't take issue with those who still owe their souls, by choice of course, to the GOP, but I damned sure get a bit testy when they take issue with me for the stand I have taken.

Party loyalists efforts would be much more receptive if they weren't, for the most part filled with disdain and calumny towards the very people the GOP has always claimed was it's base. But of course talk is cheap.

It will interesting to see who the National Committee selects, via the insane primary process to be the next GOP standard bearer. To be sure I won't have a say in the process, but that is my choice. The game is rigged and I don't play rigged games.

Yep..me too...he was the man for the hour.. without question... and kept this country safe throughout his office.

Now I didn’t agree with all he did in office..but I understand politics enough that you can’t always get what you want...in fact sometimes you have to do some things you don’t want to do.. in order to get the weighty things you do want.

Yes, I miss him and the security our country knew then...I don’t feel secure now..in fact it is a fearful time for most I think.

I am not a member of the Republican Party.

I'm shocked, I tell you! Shocked!

My guess is that you will never find a party or a politician that agrees with you 100% and you think you are the only person with all the answers.

If you have the right to put thoughts into other people's heads, others have the right to put thoughts into your's.

I’m really tired of the conservative vs. GOP theme, an exercise in sheer self-defeatism.

You couldn't find a thought to put in my head, sir! In fact I doubt if you have ever had an original that didn't mirror the "party" line!

What is it about this is not a GOP forum that you simply can't grasp? Damn if you are the best of the rank and file Republicans these days, they are in worse shape that I imagined!

Have a great life!

You are so funny...and don't know it! Actually, I'm more "independent" than GOP but certainly would never vote Dem. I think third parties are useless...been there, done that.

You don't understand that what I have poorly (apparently)tried to point out to you is --you seem to think all individuals who belong to a group, are group thinkers. You label people...according to your perception...which I know isn't good!

You come across as an intolerant, narrow minded person...but, I could be as wrong about you as you are about me.

Hello Mary...Am just getting here....busy day and am tired tonight...

Not only do I miss Bush ..but Cheney, Condi, and the rest..heck even Powell, though it seems now he wasn’t as I thought. Still it was a mighty strong administration...the very opposite of what we are stuck with now...
