Regarding the fasting mentioned— what do the organizers have in mind? Is it like Catholic Lenten Fridays, where adults eat two small meals and one normal meal? Or is there some other type of fast?

Fasting is personally tailored to meet your individual situation. It does not have to involve food. Some people give up an hour of TV each day; others cut down on computer networking time. Some may give up a certain meal or specific foods. Some may decide to awaken an hour early to pray. The general idea is to substitute an ordinary activity with time for prayer instead.
