LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Former longtime East Texas congressman Charlie Wilson has died. Staff at Lufkin Memorial Hospital confirmed the report. He was 76.

According to a Memorial Hospital press release, Wilson died after suffering from cardio pulmonary arrest. He was pronounced dead at 12:16 p.m. in the hospital’s emergency room.

Wilson served in the 2nd U.S. Congressional District from 1972-1996 and was known as the “Liberal from Lufkin.” A book about his efforts in the U.S.’s covert war against Russia in Afghanistan was chronicled in the book, “Charlie Wilson’s War,” which was later made into a movie.

Sad to say, you dont see those sorta Democrats anymore.
I enjoyed reading his book. Of course, it was better than the movie.
I wish I coulda met the man - I lived in the district he represented.

RIP

“I enjoyed reading his book.”

Didn’t George Crile write the book?

Now THIS was a man.

The book reveals how he out-foxed both sides of the aisle and the CIA to whup the Soviets.

Wow! Charlie, you’re the second guy I want to meet in heaven.

Granted, I may not make it there, but I know you will.

One of the few Democrats I liked. One helluva story there. He could’ve shown Bill Clinton a thing or two as well LOL.

He was a great man for what he did to get Congress behind defeating the Sov's in Afghanistan. You don't see them any more, Scoop Jackson Democrats, liberals on domestic policy but conservative on foreign and defense. It was because of Dems like this that Reagan could govern.

Of course, I loved the movie. My favorite line was something like this (from memory):

Tip wanted me to ask you if --

He wants me to take a seat on the Ethics Committee.

Yeah

Well, hell, I'm on the other side of that issue!

LOL!

Charlie Wilson was a rascal with a good heart and a solid core of patriotism. I trust that he and Ben Franklin are now swapping tales.

LOL! Great lines.

At another point in the movie (he drank a lot) he was coaching his secretaries what to tell the press if asked why he wouldn’t go into rehab ...The standard reply was to be: “Because they don’t serve scotch in rehab”.

I am confident that Charlie Wilson with a handler like the Lady Speaker would have behaved just like all the other Dem rats.

I loved the Charlie's Angels. Here's another good quote:

Larry Liddle: Miss?
Charlie's Angel #1: Yes sir?
Larry Liddle: It seems to me lookin' around, that it's almost all women workin' here; and that they're all very pretty. Is that common?
Charlie's Angel #1: Well... Congressman Wilson, he has an expression. He says uhh, "You can teach 'em to type, but you can't teach 'em to grow tits."
Larry Liddle: Well, that's... charming.

He was always a straight shooter, never lacking for some great one-liners.

Back in the 1980’s - “The American people are smart - they elect a Democrat congress to protect their benefits, but elect Republican Presidents to keep their taxes low.”

When a heretofore obscure Primary challenger won a ten million dollar lottery jackpot midway through the campaign - “He can have this seat if he’ll hand over that lottery ticket.”

When learning he was the worst offender in the House bank overdraft scandal — “I never claimed to be an accountant.”
