Voters are deeply pessimistic about the state of Britain today, believing that society is broken and heading in the wrong direction, a Populus poll for The Times has found.
Nearly three fifths of voters say that they hardly recognise the country they are living in, while 42 per cent say they would emigrate if they could.
But worries over the pace of social change and dislocation are balanced by the belief that life will get better, according to the survey undertaken at the weekend.
It suggests that 70 per cent believe that society is now broken, echoing a Conservative campaign theme of the past two years, while 68 per cent say people who play by the rules get a raw deal and 82 per cent think it is time for a change.
The snapshot of Britain also confirms, however, that the battle between the parties has tightened with Labour two points up at 30 per cent.
Women, working-class people and Tory voters were more likely to say that they hardly recognise their own country.
Overall, 64 per cent think that Britain is going in the wrong direction and just 31 per cent believe it is on the right track.

Ya can bet on the whiney Brits to blame the USA for their woes...always have always will.........
I was in London last summer.
Vast numbers of unassimilated nasty unbathed obnoxious muslims (in full burkas, etc), especially over by the Eye and infesting the River Thames Embankment.
The Socialist/Labour Party is insane for letting these anti-British Islamists into the UK.
“Ya can bet on the whiney Brits to blame the USA for their woes...always have always will..”
You need to get out more.
Actually cutting back on my travels lately. Today Im going to SA and later to Europe...but I shall pass the UK because Ive been there countless times and Im tired of whining.
“Today Im going to SA and later to Europe.”
In your dreams.
“Socialist/Labour Party is insane for letting these anti-British Islamists into the UK”
it started in 90 with the Thatcher ousting, not just 97 with blair.
This is the future of America if we don’t stop Obamination and his fellow demons (liberals/socialists/communists).
Saracuda is right—it’s time for a REVOLUTION.
“But worries over the pace of social change and dislocation are balanced by the belief that life will get better...”
Only if they get rid of the libs and all of their policies including suicide by muslim.
Its surprising only to those elites for whom life hasnt changed much - or at least, has only changed insofar as its gotten more comfortable.
But the average white working class person knows differently - can see how worse things have become. This is what happens to societies that emphasise rights over responsibilities; that do not punish dishonesty, greed and graft but instead villify virtue and sober living.
The land I love, for all its emphasis on “Human rights” and legislation meant to enforce “equality”, has become a meaner, less tolerant and less fair society.
And it IS going to get worse.
Since when?
Sounds a lot like the USA.
Colonial Americans were taller, heavier, better fed and better marksmen than the British they faced. The British soldiers were thought to be no more than slightly intelligent, two-footed animals by their officers and were treated as such. Ever larger land holdings by the British gentry forced many citizens into hopeless situations in the cities. In fact, early recruiting sites had a picture of a side of beef to let the illiterate know that at least they’ll be fed. Desertion, although punishable by death, was high. And you wonder why people left Britian?
The British have seen their country as “broken” with shocking regularity ever since the Conqueror.
Vanders9 wrote: “Go and get stuffed. Your ancestors didn’t leave Britain to avoid being “sheep”. They left so they could victimise other people in peace.”
..... Fascinating. Perhaps you could expand upon this remark and provide some background.
Exactly.
