It’s an insane assumption, since there’s no way the patient could have put the blank form in his own file, and no reason he would. I’m thinking this is not really a mistake, but that DNR is the default assumption at all times, unless there’s a family member present to insist on the patient’s receiving care.
Normally FReepers put a (sarc) at the end of such a statement.
There’s definitely a slippery slope. All the more reason for the Republicans next chance they get to succeed in aggressively enacting cost-reducing, non-socialistic measures to lower the health care burden on all Americans. If they squander another such opportunity, I’m afraid one day we may have a full UK socialistic system over here.
It doesn’t seem like this has anything to do with the government.
You’re very welcome.
And some have been quite open about the foot-in-the-door process you’re talking about.
“Its really rather frightening to think how easily this happened and could happen to anybody.”
Sad, ain’t it? Wouldn’t want to maybe err a little on the side of KEEPING THE GUY ALIVE, eh? Jeez...
Cannot believe there are no mandatory failsafe measures taken during end of life procedures, or lack thereof.
I can’t said it happened in this case but it seems a lot of bad medicine and abusive nursing in the UK is done by foreign nurses and doctors. That have no loyalty or emotional connection to an elderly Englishman or woman.
If an older patient fought in WW2 and got medals for his bravery...What do they care? They can’t relate. A bit like 0bama actually. Some of them just see rich (in their mind) old white people to ignore or somehow get something from
That’s a really decent thing to say. Imagine that hanging over your head for the rest of your life.
Under Obamacare you’ll have a much better chance of surviving if you’re on Death Row than in a government run hospital...
Standard operating procedure in our hospital is to read the instructions on the form, not just see that there is a form in the file, when the patient codes.
If it was blank, someone should have had a clue, and initiated life saving procedures. Our hospital also places one of 3 colored bands around the wrist, which tells them at a glance that all efforts should be made or to consult the chart.
The family is given a brochure that explains the codes. Any exception to the code that they and the patient choose must be noted on the code sheet, and double checked with the family.
When my dad was in the hospital, I stayed there 24 hours a day till he came home. I caught some snafus that could have had a negative effect, but could not always prevent every mistake even though I was very vigilent. There is no way to prevent human error 100%.
They often tried to make me leave in the evenings. One of their biggest excuses was HIPPA(right to privacy). I would just laugh, and tell them that I was very familiar with HIPPA, and had already recorded numerous violations of HIPPA during the day. Also sitting quietly in the corner while people sleep was not on the list of issues that HIPPA addressed.
The hospital needs to have better operating procedures. I feel very sorry for this family. This is an unacceptable error on the part of the hospital.
With ObamaCare, we all get that form inserted into our file.
And don’t worry, it’s signed by Obama, Harry Reid and Pelosi.
So there can be no misunderstanding.
Yeh. I had power of attorney for my dad for the last 5 years of his life. I always gave them a copy of that, and when they asked for copies of his advanced directives,I just said no thanks. I told them that he and I had what ever would be needed, and they should consult me, if he was not able to make his wishes known.
No way was I going to give them some document they could misinterpret to deny him care he needed.
“Seriously, I feel bad for the person who made the mistake. Everyone goes through so much paperwork to do anything nowadays, its easy to miss stuff. When youre under time pressure, you cant always review everything as thoroughly as youd like to..”

It’s never too much trouble to confirm a DNR.
When I was in labor over in the UK (absolute NIGHTMARE, btw)....my baby was going into distress. He had electrodes surgically implanted on his scalp before birth. The mechanism that was recording his heart rate spat out a piece of paper with the reading. The nurse scribbled the wrong name on the ‘tape’. Good thing my hubby and I happened to catch it. Geesh!
Same child was released from hospital after having surgery a year later. He was sent home with the ‘catheter’ in his foot used to administer the medicine to put him to sleep. It took 2 days to get him in with a GP to have it removed. I could go on.......but it makes my blood boil.
Socialized medicine SUCKS.
No one should leave a family memeber alone in a hosptial, ever. Rotate shifts of family to keep vigil. We are entering thrird world healthcare and someone should always be there to care for your loved one.
Call me cynical, but who inherits - and how much?
