After spending about 35 years working with mentally retarded kids, I will use retarded when I want to and I really don't recall a parent of a MR kid being offended by the word until now! It is what it is.

Are we going to have people offended by "diabetic" next?

I'm reminded of the father of my childhood friend, who when their Downy came into the den with brother's sliderule, said, "Look at that! She's a genius." They loved the kid and there was no "shame" associated with her "condition." They enjoyed her just the way she was.
