Re-read the article. It isn't "fracking" that has made production economical, but horizontal drilling. Prior to that invention, it WAS economics keeping the shale gas in the ground. The article is correct, the problem is green propaganda about "dangerous chemicals contaminating ground water".

One problem we’ve had locally is near Susquehanna PA - there WAS contamination.
So that gets shouted from the rooftops while they ignore the many examples where drilling has occurred without major incident (everyone will complain about the “minors” - trucks digging up country roads - noise, etc...)
