The Saints Linebacker Who Speaks His Mind
New York Times ^ | February 3, 2010 | JOE LAPOINTE

New Orleans Saints linebacker Scott Fujita addresses hot-button issues the way he might meet an opposing running back: directly.

So Fujita was not shy Tuesday about entering two Super Bowl debates that have little to do with his team’s game Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

At issue are two Super Bowl television commercials, one about abortion, the other about gay rights.

The first ad — which will be shown on CBS — is an antiabortion message from Focus on the Family that includes Tim Tebow, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida.

The other ad — which was rejected by CBS — is for ManCrunch, a gay dating service. Fujita has spoken out before in favor of abortion rights and gay rights.

“It’s just me standing up for equal rights,” Fujita said. “It’s not that courageous to have an opinion if you think it’s the right thing and you believe it wholeheartedly.”

The Tebow ad suggests that Tebow’s mother was advised about having an abortion when she was pregnant with him, but chose instead to give birth.

The issue resonates with Fujita because he was adopted,

"Former Heisman Trophy winner"? Did they take it away from him?

Tebow is "a Heisman Trophy winning..." or "the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner..." He is not a "former Heisman Trophy winner..."

I am truly offended by his comments. The Dallas Cowboys always have been, and always will be “America’s Team”!

"They must have given up the fight to censure the ad...."

Nope...the article itself censures it.

What they have not been able to do is censor the ad. Two different words, with two different meanings.

Once CBS and the NFL accepted that Tebow ad, they should have know that some players would begin to run their mouths about their politics and social issues.

The Dallas Cowboys always have been, and always will be “America’s Team”!

Not to most of the people in the other 49 states they won't.

How can the Cowboys be America's Team after they cried like little children following their playoff loss to the Vikings?

Fujita needs to STFU and play football. I’m so sick of celebrities trying to push their alternative lifestyle agenda.

They were happy for the Vikings who have zero Super Bowl trophies as opposed to FIVE!

(I knew that comment would draw some fire!)

Oh yeah, the “Glory Days” which are far behind the Dallas Cowboys.

And now it seems to just be the “Crying Days” for the Dallas Cowboys and they can do nothing but cry about the way Brett Farve ran up the score in that playoff game.

Just because it has 9.9 million hits doesn’t make it correct. If you are a “former...” that indicates you aren’t one any more. Clinton is a former president. Fujita is a former Kansas City Chief. But an award, even an annual one, is forever unless taken away. You refer to “Cy Young winning pitcher...” and “Academy Award winning director....” and yes, “Heisman Trophy winner...” There is no ‘former’ to it.

Who would you rather have anchoring your linebacker corps, this clown from Berkeley, or someone like Chris Spielman who should be in the hall of fame.

So when Simpson gets out of jail will he be a former convicted felon?

Didn’t bother me a bit. Sack Favre and it doesn’t happen. Hell, give him a concussion on the last play of the game and the Vikes never do that again. As for the glory days, we’ll see about next year. Only one team goes home happy.

Scott Fujita

I think that Chris Spielman may be a little long in the tooth to be a Super Bowl team’s linebacker.

However, Chris may be able to help the Detroit Lions in anchoring their linebacker corps.
