I don’t see how a lifelong Democrat (if that’s what he was) suddenly turned Republican can possibly win in the primaries.

Reagan was a lifelong rat, twice president of his union, admirer of FDR until he switched parties.

I don’t live his Griffith’s district, but I think it’s common knowledge in Alabama that he took a page out of Specter’s playbook and switched parties so that re-election would be easier

Yes Reagan switched parties, but remember that a democrat back then was a far cry from the socialist progressives of today. It was not such a big leap in those days.

Reagan was nominated for president almost 20 years after switching parties, and his entire elected political career was as a Republican. Quite different from this 'rat from Alabama.
