A South Scranton man was arrested Thursday after allegedly dousing a woman with lighter fluid, setting her on fire during an argument, and leaving her critically burned, city police said.

Randy Barr, 44, told investigators he was angry at Marianne Krug for talking down to him and threatening to poison his dog prior to the early-morning incident in an apartment at 632 Moosic St., police said.

Ms. Krug, 44, was taken to Community Medical Center and then airlifted to the Lehigh Valley Hospital burn center in Allentown, where she was listed in critical condition Thursday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.

According to the arrest affidavit filed by Detective Michael Schultz and acting Detective Rich Ianuzzo, Mr. Barr and Ms. Krug lived at the apartment with two other men, including Ms. Krug's boyfriend, Terance Healey. Another man, Stephen Frack, was visiting at the time.

Mr. Barr, who initially told police he was sleeping during the incident, later admitted he grabbed a container of charcoal lighter fluid from the back porch and poured it on Ms. Krug as she watched television, the affidavit said. He then flicked a lighted match at her.

Mr. Barr said Ms. Krug caught fire briefly before he used his hands to pat out the flames, the affidavit said. He then left the apartment.

Mr. Frack told police Ms. Krug later asked for his lighter and went into the bathroom. When he and Mr. Healey heard her screaming, they went to the bathroom and found Ms. Krug with her clothing on fire, police said.

The two used wet towels to douse the flames and called 911.

When officers and paramedics responded around 1:15 a.m., they found Ms. Krug with severe burns on the front of her body from her stomach to her face, police said. A pile of burned clothing lay nearby on the floor.

Mr. Barr, who returned to the apartment while Mr. Healey and Mr. Frack said they were helping Ms. Krug, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, along with single counts of arson endangering persons, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and terroristic threats.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Robert Russell and held in the Lackawanna County Prison on $150,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was scheduled Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

Detective Capt. Al Leoncini said police were unable to talk with Ms. Krug but plan to interview her when her condition improves.

“Man arrested and charged for lighting woman on fire”

Light a woman a fire and she will be warm for a day.
Light her on fire and she will be warm the rest of her life.

Nothing excuses what be did, and he should be punished severely for his actions. That being said, it’s not particularly bright to tell someone you are going to poison their dog. If she did that, she was a jackass herself.
