Inbox (Brown Is The New Black And Watch Out For Plymouth County Alert)
National Review ^ | 1/16/2010 | Robert Costa

Posted on 01/16/2010 5:26:53 PM PST by goldstategop

— “Brown is the new black.”

— “2009 was about going green, 2010 is about going Brown.”

— “Driving to Logan last night, I was flipping radio channels. It was wall-to-wall Coakley ads (including WRKO, home of Rush and Howie Carr, who had Gerald Amirault on his show). I heard the same Emily’s List ad three times. It may sound a bit desperate on her part but you would think that the overwhelming coverage has to ultimately rub off on voters?”

— “I'm just a littl' old Conservative down here in FL (sending $$ to Rubio when I can squeeze some out of the budget), and have no special insight into the MA race, but in looking at the local pundit video links you thoughtfully provided, one thing jumped out at me. The picture for Brown when they flash the poll scores is wonderful, straight-on and smiling warmly. The picture for Coakley is terrible, looking like a disapproving schoolmarm or judgmental prosecutor. Don't know how the pictures got there, but they seem to support the meme that Brown is trying to get out. For what it's worth.”

— “I have relatives in the IBEW. They have a big sign on 93 South endorsing Coakley. The members are not voting for Coakley. Brown will win by 15%.”

— “Some I am close to work for Mayor Menino in Boston. He spoke with [a city official] who said she feels like Brown is going to win. Office is flooded with calls for absentee ballots and questions about polling locations with the callers voluntarily saying they are Brown supporters.”

— “I said to an engineer I work with "are you going to vote for Brown"? I know this guy voted for Obama and was greatly disappointed in him. He opened his lab notebook and said "did you see this?" It was the WSJ folded open to Dorothy Rabinowitz's story on the Amiraults.”

— “The Cape is Brown country. Signs everywhere, absentee ballot requests through the roof, and I haven't seen a single Coakley sign anywhere. This area is the most conservative in MA (which isn't saying much), but I'd be surprised if Coakley got more than 35 percent here. Brown's appearing here later today, then going to Plymouth County—which, if he wins, will be the area that puts him over the top. Another anecdote: my wife and I are registered Republicans, yet are getting bombarded with direct mail hit pieces from the Coakley campaign—all of it over-the-top and amateurish. Extrapolate that, and you can guess that the Dems are wasting a lot of money.”

— “Too bad for Martha that she didn't spend her six-day vacation with her head buried in briefing books. You know, things like "a visitor's guide to Massachusetts.”

— “I was walking through campus as WPI yesterday. There were police everywhere, and a cop told me the Bill Clinton was coming for a Coakley rally in two hours. Far too late to try to snag a couple tickets so that the kids could catch a glimpse of a former president. After I picked them up later, we happened to see the Presidents motorcade, so on a lark we followed it. I told them it would be IMPOSSIBLE to actually get back to WPI since it would be FILLED with cars, and there were a lot of cars, but I could still find a space. We walked to Alden hall just to see the crowds of people gathered, and I warned them that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to get in. But there were no crowds outside the doors at all. The doors weren't locked for security. The vestibule was empty and the doors to the hall were just open. We could just walk in and get good places too. It was standing room only because they had taken all the chairs out except on the podium. They were only using the front half of the hall, and the balcony was closed. It was a pretty good turnout for a glee club concert. Clinton tried to fire up the crowd, but it was impossible since the percentage of actual voters was too low - discounting the security types and the foreign students and the people Boston and New York City duds. Clinton himself was in pretty good form, and you had to wonder why they were wasting his time like this. Coakley did a pretty good job, too, for Massachusetts, although some people started to leave as soon as Clinton was done. She better be better set up for the Obama rally.”

— “I know that the barbershop in a leafy, fairly wealthy suburb near Boston is not, sociologically speaking, the same thing as The Barbershop. But it's Saturday morning, and I just got back from getting a haircut, and everyone in a very busy shop said they were voting for Brown. Granted, it's possible that someone might have been too intimidated to acknowledge support for Coakley, but even if that were the case, that would be significant. In these parts, you don't usually have to hide your support for a Democrat inside a brown paper wrapper. In the town center, there were several sign-holders for Brown, none for Coakley. There was a constant beep-beeping of car horns signaling solidarity as they drove past. In a final note...my 87-year-old mother-in-law is the prototypical Greatest Generation-er: registered Democrat with, literally, a picture of JFK on the wall next to the picture of Pope John Paul XXIII. She's already told my wife that she wants to be driven to the polls on Tuesday to vote for "that nice young man." It's going to happen. Amazing.”

Lots of gems including the line the Cape is Brown country but people will remember this one on Election Night:

Brown's appearing here later today, then going to Plymouth County—which, if he wins, will be the area that puts him over the top.

Indeed. Watch Plymouth County carefully on Tuesday. See you all then!

I was sort of blown away by the engineer with the saved Dorothy Rabinowitz WSJ article about the Amiraults. I remember reading her incredible articles about Amirault and Grant Snowden in FL. No one wanted to help them. The articles were frightening in how those men were railroaded. Ditto the Buckeys in CA.

One thing I seem to be getting from some of these stories is people really like Scott Brown. He seems like a likeable, level headed and serious guy. The older lady saying “that nice young man.”

•If you live in Massachusetts, become an election judge. In Boston they pay $135-$185 and they NEED Republican monitors.

Needed; military and retired law enforcement VFW and police organizations etc to monitor polls- prevent the voter fraud they’re plotting right now. Video tape everything; document everything; prosecute the perpetrators. http://www.cityofboston.gov/news/default.aspx?id=3599

Please! Every time my (90yr old) mother refers to somebody as “that nice young man,” you know he’s probably a serial killer in his spare time.

But otherwise, you’re right. The Rabinowitz articles were good. I read a suggestion at that time which intrigued me, namely, that it was very easy to get this hysteria going because a lot of women felt guilty about having to leave their kids with others and go out to work. Blaming their unhappiness on a supposed sex criminal satisfied a kind of psychological need among the population. I don’t know how much credence I’d give to this, but there was definitely a strange environment that canny politicians could manipulate to their benefit.

Wow, just wow. Although that Pope name/number is way wrong.
