— “I was walking through campus as WPI yesterday. There were police everywhere, and a cop told me the Bill Clinton was coming for a Coakley rally in two hours. Far too late to try to snag a couple tickets so that the kids could catch a glimpse of a former president. After I picked them up later, we happened to see the Presidents motorcade, so on a lark we followed it. I told them it would be IMPOSSIBLE to actually get back to WPI since it would be FILLED with cars, and there were a lot of cars, but I could still find a space. We walked to Alden hall just to see the crowds of people gathered, and I warned them that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to get in. But there were no crowds outside the doors at all. The doors weren't locked for security. The vestibule was empty and the doors to the hall were just open. We could just walk in and get good places too. It was standing room only because they had taken all the chairs out except on the podium. They were only using the front half of the hall, and the balcony was closed. It was a pretty good turnout for a glee club concert. Clinton tried to fire up the crowd, but it was impossible since the percentage of actual voters was too low - discounting the security types and the foreign students and the people Boston and New York City duds. Clinton himself was in pretty good form, and you had to wonder why they were wasting his time like this. Coakley did a pretty good job, too, for Massachusetts, although some people started to leave as soon as Clinton was done. She better be better set up for the Obama rally.”

But it's Saturday morning, and I just got back from getting a haircut, and everyone in a very busy shop said they were voting for Brown. In a final note...my 87-year-old mother-in-law is the prototypical Greatest Generation-er: registered Democrat with, literally, a picture of JFK on the wall next to the picture of Pope John Paul XXIII. She's already told my wife that she wants to be driven to the polls on Tuesday to vote for "that nice young man." It's going to happen. Amazing.”

I was sort of blown away by the engineer with the saved Dorothy Rabinowitz WSJ article about the Amiraults. I remember reading her incredible articles about Amirault and Grant Snowden in FL. No one wanted to help them. The articles were frightening in how those men were railroaded. Ditto the Buckeys in CA.
One thing I seem to be getting from some of these stories is people really like Scott Brown. He seems like a likeable, level headed and serious guy. The older lady saying “that nice young man.”

Please! Every time my (90yr old) mother refers to somebody as “that nice young man,” you know he’s probably a serial killer in his spare time.
But otherwise, you’re right. The Rabinowitz articles were good. I read a suggestion at that time which intrigued me, namely, that it was very easy to get this hysteria going because a lot of women felt guilty about having to leave their kids with others and go out to work. Blaming their unhappiness on a supposed sex criminal satisfied a kind of psychological need among the population. I don’t know how much credence I’d give to this, but there was definitely a strange environment that canny politicians could manipulate to their benefit.
