[Venezuelan] President Hugo Chávez affirmed that television in Venezuela features too many programs with capitalist values and urged producers to begin adding content that emphasizes socialist ideals more, including soap operas.
Instead of producing programs oriented at consumerism, Chávez said, producers should make "socialist soap operas", among other programs and films imbued with that ideology.
"I was in Cuba a short while back, and they produce soap operas there, but not capitalist soap operas, rather with social, socialist content," said Chávez, who was speaking to a film writer and producer during his Sunday radio and television program.
Chávez criticized film producers who have a capitalist ideology, saying that they make pictures to encourage consumerism, "to poison our children, incite violence, tobacco addiction, smoking, drugs, alcohol."
"I am asking you to make socialist soap operas, different from the capitalist ones," he pointed out.
He could model them on C-SPAN.
We’ve already got one in the White House.
We could send Chavez a few producers and directors to help him out.
I posted that story on one of the telenovela forums a couple of days ago and the response from those totally non-political folks was universally negative. They all rolled their eyes and indicated an urge to throw up. And also indicated that Venezuela should get rid of him pronto.
I think I will start refering to our N-I-C (Narcissist-in-Chief) as Zero Chavez. It suits him.
Michael Moore could do socialist soap operas. And he can also help out with Venezuela’s healthcare system.
Just what people want to watch...shows with people prattling on about the glory of the socialist revolution and the installation of the dictatorship of the proletariat. How inspiring.
If he really wants socialist soap operas he could easily download ABC/NBC/CBS/MSNBC/CNN news casts. I would also suggest he get in contact with Dan Rather, a known master at socialist soap operas. Who knows, maybe 60 minutes will do a program on this?
It appears most of the comments on the response forum ridiculed Chavez. One called him a monkey.
He will have to make sure they air during a time int he day when they are not doing their rolling blackouts....
Life in a socialist country IS a soap opera. I’d like to see the episode where Hugo swings from a rope.
