Bill Clinton to lend support to Coakley
Boston Globe ^ | 01/10/10

Posted on 01/09/2010 11:00:50 PM PST by freespirited

Former President Bill Clinton will visit Boston on Friday to lend his support to US Senate candidate Martha Coakley, joining the Democratic nominee for a rally at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.

The event is a sign not just of Clinton’s continued support for Coakley - he endorsed her during last month’s primary - but also that Democrats are taking seriously the race between her and Republican Scott P. Brown.

Clinton, who recorded a phone message sent to 500,000 potential voters on the eve of the primary, will appear with Coakley and US Senator John F. Kerry at the rally, which will be held at 2 p.m. and is open to the public. The election, to fill the seat of the late Edward M. Kennedy, follows on Jan. 19.

He decried a quote from Senator Paul G. Kirk Jr., the seat’s temporary occupant, suggesting Kirk would vote to pass the bill if such a vote fell after the election but before the new senator could be sworn in...

In a radio interview yesterday, Coakley agreed with Brown that the new senator “should be sworn in as soon as possible’’ after the election.

Secretary of State William F. Galvin said the controversy appears to be manufactured. Federal law requires him to wait 10 days before certifying the election results, to allow for absentee ballots from military personnel stationed overseas to be counted.

In 2007, the US House allowed Niki Tsongas to be sworn in less than 48 hours after her special election, accepting a temporary certification from Galvin at a time when the state’s Fifth District seat was vacant. The US Senate has stricter rules, meaning the 10-day period must be upheld, Galvin said.

I dont know what to think. Globe just released a poll that has Coakley up 15 pts. I’d like to see the internals.

Did Scott Brown promise there’d be single girls at the Coakley event to get Clinton up here?

OK so the obvious question is why isn't the GOP taking this race seriously? If they expect to coast to victory in this off year election by depending on conservatives to vote in a bunch of RINOs in safe districts while not supporting key races that may be tough, they're in for a rude awakening. People are PO'd and want to see real change not just a bunch of fresh faced progressives with R's after their names.

Wonder if Monica will be there to greet Bill. Or, does she still have a bad taste in her mouth?

“Both major-party candidates campaigned in Boston yesterday. Coakley, who had few public events in the first weeks after the primary, stopped by shops in Jamaica Plain with local officials to promote her plan for targeted tax relief for small businesses.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I looked at the events schedule on her campaign website. It’s downright insulting how few appearances she’s been putting in. She really expected the election to be a formality. House Kennedy declared her the heir to his throne. That should have been it right there.

Seems to me that if you plan to “endorse” someone, you should have some basic ingredient in your own character that would make said endorsement a good thing.

Oh no, you don’t understand the dynamics of the situation, m’boy.

The pubbie establishment has decided to play it safe. Don’t take a stand on anything that might be controversial. Don’t make any waves. Just sit tight and hope the House and Senate seats just fall into your lap.

Heh...no way! No, I do think that bringing in Clinton will be the downfall for Coakley but, maybe that just is my hope! She if falling fast - thank goodness (even in a blue state) due to the Democrats stupidity...

Go Brown!!

Steele, RNC Raising Money For Scott Brown
New in email - not finding a link for it at GOP dot com. Full text below.

On January 19th, Republicans have our best opportunity in 48 years to take back what Democrats call “Ted Kennedy’s seat.”

Our Republican candidate, State Senator Scott Brown, is running a fierce grassroots campaign for what is really “the people’s seat.”

You have an opportunity right now to help get our country back on the path to fiscal discipline and limited government by playing an active part in the special election for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

Scott Brown’s common-sense message to cut taxes, lower spending and shrink the size of government is resonating with voters.

This week a Rasmussen Reports poll of likely voters in Massachusetts reported that Scott Brown is closing in on liberal Democrat Martha Coakley to within single digits! One of the most compelling metrics of this survey is that Scott Brown leads Martha Coakley 65% to 21% among voters not affiliated with either of the major parties. This is a str ong statement in Massachusetts where over 51% of the voters are Independents.

Scott Brown is exactly the type of Republican we need to elect to begin the process of restoring fiscal sanity in Washington, D.C. He will stand up to Barack Obama’s left-wing tax-and-spend agenda and fight for grassroots Americans like you.

But to win this important election, it is vital we get Republican and like-minded Independent voters to the polls on January 19th. Your support is crucial to Scott’s get-out-the-vote operation.

Please visit Scott Brown’s website today www.brownforussenate.com/ and make a donation of $50, $100 or even $150 — the maximum amount you can contribute is $2,400. Whatever amount you contribute, please do so now.

The special election is less than 12 days away. I hope to hear from you today.

Sincerely,

Michael Steele
Chairman, Republican National Committee

P.S. The special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts is the first step in breaking the Democrats’ stranglehold on power in Congress. Please help send Scott Brown to Washington, D.C. to fight for you by making a donation to his campaign today. Thank you.

Billy Jeff's record in this regard isn't so stellar lately. Slick’s insertion into this race actually makes this is a lose/lose for Obie.

If you look at the internals of the PPP poll (http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/PPP_Release_MA_45398436.pdf),
notice the Favorable vs Unfavorable numbers for both candidates, as well as the undecided "Not Sure" crowd.

Coakley's support has crystallized, but nearly one-fourth of (Independent) women are still open-minded about Brown:

Sorry, Steele is an idiot and if the Republicans win anything it will be because of the Tea Party, NOT because of Steele or anyone else in the Republican Party for sure... They seem to be lost here...

The only reason they might win is because the Tea Party votes out the stupid incumbents (both parties) and since the Democrats are in the majority, they lose worse...
